I find liturature on WW 2 to be very interesting. I like to get as many views of the war as possible. Most accounts I have read were dealing with the western allies. But in the last year I did fond considerable information on the war from the German perspective. You might consider it giving the devil his due but I always wondered what motivated men to fight and die for the cause of something as evil as Nazism. What I mostly found out is that the common soldier in the German Army or in the Waffen SS were motivated by ether a sense of patriotism or a desire to fight communism. In some cases they did not have any choice but to fight. I am also looking for some good liturature from the Soviet side. For the most part, however, most wartime soviet liturature was so full of propaganda and mistruths that it could not be considered credible. Truely objective war liturature told from the red army perspective is very hard to find.

I've read a lot about it, too, but I have to say that anti-semitism and right wing ideology was pretty widespread in Germany, hitler was born and raised into it, and while Hitler was of above average charisma, Germany would have still become a Nazi state without him around. He only took advantage of what already existed, he didn't create anything new out of the chaos. I also think, after rereading some of it, that the Allies screwed up in not occupying the whole country after WW I. Of course hindsight is always 20/20, but given the social and economic conditions it seems insane now to have left them to their own devices. I could do an internet search and pretend I know who the hell Sven Hassel is, but I'm not bashful about being utterly ignorant as to who he is/was, so who the hell is sven Hassel? |

According to himself, Hassel was born as Sven Pedersen at Frederiksborg, Denmark in April 19 1917. He later adopted his mother’s maiden name Hassel. At the age of 14 he joined a merchant navy as a cabin boy and worked in ship until his military service in 1936. Denmark had its share of the Recession and in 1937 now unemployed Hassel moved to Germany and managed join a cavalry regiment when he agreed to change nationality. In 1939 he served as a tank driver during the German invasion of Poland. Year later he tried to escape and went AWOL. He was captured and sentenced to a penal regiment. In its ranks he served in many fronts, especially in Russia, was wounded seven times and reached the rank of lieutenant. He surrendered to Russian troops in Berlin in 1945 and spent following years in various POW camps. During this time he began to write. He was released in 1949. Another account states that he was a liar who made up his entire service in the SS and was a Danish Nazi Collaborator who spied on his fellow Danes and was imprisoned after the war. It further states that he did not write any of his work himself, as he was illiterate but his wife wrote all the stories that were attributed to him. He was the author of a number of pulp novels describing his war experiences. In these books he introduces a wide aray of sorted characters including Porta, a political prisoner and convict-soldier in one of Germanie's infamous 999 brigades. His convict soldiers went on a series of misadventures in the war on the eastern front. His stories are sometimes funny and sometimes horrific with their descriptions of blood and brutality. He describes wartime attrocities on both sides. In his books, murder, rape, looting and arson are all part of the war. His books do describe actual events during the war. In one episold, the 999 brigade go behind enemy lines to liberate a groupd of heros who are beseiged by the enemy only to find that these Germans are really relaxing in an estate, trading guns for liquor and cavorting with Russian women. He also describes the suppression of the Warsaw uprising in brutal detail.

Well, 'brilliant writer' and 'outrageous fraud' are the same things many times, they aren't mutually exclusive. LOL
