GENDER DIFFERENCES IN ABILITY


Despite politically correct assertions that gender is a meaningless social construct, numerous differences between the sexes have been found not only in their physical and behavioral traits, but also with regards to their mental abilities.

How Men and Women Excel

It is a little known fact that women have better fine motor control while men have better gross motor control. Many have noted that women seem "graceful," and this comes from a greater precision in fine movement, while men, on the other hand, have better overall coordination and agility. Men also put on muscle more readily due to their higher testosterone levels, and this, combined with their greater average height (they are on average 5 inches taller than women) gives men roughly three times the upper body strength, and one-and-a-half times the lower body strength of women.

Visuo-Spatial abilities consistently favor males by a large amount not only across ethnicities but also across species, which virtually eliminates the environment or culture as a source for this difference. Visuo-spatial ability is linked to testosterone (that is, men with more testosterone seem better on visuo-spatial ability than men with less testosterone, while women with more testosterone likewise show better visuospatial abilities than women with less testosterone), so testosterone levels seem to be the primary cause of this difference. The greatest visuo-spatial sex difference appears on tests on the mental visualization and rotation of two- or three-dimensional shapes. Apparently, the same thing which makes men prone to violence (men are about seven times more likely to commit a violent crime than women) makes them good at driving (female drivers are over than 35% more likely to be involved in a traffic accident than male drivers and are four times as likely to crash an airplane).

Tests of Mathematical reasoning unrelated to spatial concepts also show a sex difference in favor of males. This makes sense in light of the fact that males score better on the SAT-math and are over-represented among the ranks of expert chess players. Also, while men show greater variance in their g-factor scores than women overall, they show an especially large amount of variance in mathematical ability. This suggests that intelligence, and particularly mathematical ability, is linked to the X-chromosome. This seems the most likely explanation, as men all have only 1 X chromosome to derive mathematical ability from, but women have two such chromosomes which would theoretically average their effects.

Despite this male advantage in mathematical reasoning, women do slightly better on simple arithmetic, which is probably a result of a subset of abilities referred to as "perceptual speed" or "clerical checking." The ability to quickly recognize symbols and apply simple procedures seems to be the greatest female asset, not, as is usually believed, their verbal fluency. It is nonetheless interesting to note that while women seem little better than men at verbal reasoning, functional MRI has shown that most females process language using both the right and left hemispheres of the brain, unlike most men who use only the left to process language. This suggests that women might be more attuned to the emotional content of speech, since emotion is processed in the right hemisphere. It seems likely that the naturally more talkative and sociable nature of females makes them seem more verbally accomplished when in actuality their verbal superiority is small compared to their clerical accuracy.

It is worth noting that blacks tend to excel in the same areas where women excel (verbally and in short term memory, but not necessarily for "clerical accuracy") while East Asians do well where men do well (mathematically and spatially). It is interesting to note that, despite this, blacks have somewhat higher testosterone levels than whites, while Asians seem to have lower levels overall.



Evolutionary Explanations

The male of the any mammalian species typically fights and hunts. He usually has a larger territory than the female which he must be able to navigate through, understanding his own position and the direction in which he looks relative to important landmarks. And, this shows up in modern men, who excel at sports and video games, and who and are better able to read a map without having to turn it.

Biologists have noted a consistent trend for polygamous species to display more sexual dimorphism, while monogamous species display less. Polygamous males must be physically powerful and imposing in order to win fights with other males and secure a dominant status to avoid frequent contests to their status. This is an aspect of biology which is easy for anyone to see; stags and does are visibly different, for instance, while geese and ganders are very difficult to tell apart by sight. The height disparity in humans and the visible differences between the sexes suggests a slightly polygamous mating system. This is consistent with the fact that most sex disparities in mental abilities, while marked, are not as pronounced as the disparities between any two random individuals.



Who is Truly Smarter?

Men have much larger brains than women. Since the g factor is strongly linked to brain size (by approximately 60%) it therefore follows that women would be less intelligent than men... ...So shouldn't we expect men to be much smarter than women overall? The answer is surprising: they aren't.

This is not the paradox which it may seem to be, however. It has been found that women's brains pack their neurons far closer together, with less fatty deposits surrounding them, and that they are more highly interconnected. This difference in brain layout accounts for the different specific abilities while ensuring a roughly equal general mental ability, g...

How would we know that this is the case, and that more raw brain size is required to perform visuo-spatial operations? Recall that Asians are stronger on the visuo-spatial component to IQ while blacks are better verbally and on short term memory, despite testosterone differences which make the opposite prediction. As it turns out, Asians have much larger brains than blacks. Although the racial disparity in g accounts for much of this brain size difference, it also seems reasonable to suggest that the verbal/visuo-spatial disparity may also be involved, and that despite a lower level of testosterone, Asians have brains which naturally develop to be larger and possibly less dense. Hopefully further research into brain functioning and gender will provide a foundation for stronger conclusions in the future.

I appreciate the info, Spab, and yes, Godless capitalist is indeed interested in genetics and IQ, but he already knows a great deal about the issue if his post in "Are We Getting Smarter?" is any indication. As Jesus said - I did not come for the sake of the saved but for the sake of the lost.
