Well,how does one define "rock and roll"?
I find that people can articulate what they think rock and roll isn't but can't articulate what they think rock and roll is.

I never said either. I said REM isn't boring and doesn't rock at all.
That said, it's a hell of a lot easier to say what it isn't. Bethoven isn't rock n roll. Yani isn't rock n roll. Justin Timberlake is not rock n roll. These are obvious and non-debateable.

Jed, I wasn't complaining. But Rock's origins in Blues, Rockabilly, R&B and Country mean that it is a broad church and has to include many exponents of the craft from Elvis (pre-Army) to Franz Ferdinand.
Many purists won't accept the big Pomp or Stadium Rock preferring it to be up close and personal in club settings. Some worship instrumental technique whilst others say light shows and effects are what it's all about. It's all things to all men.
