Should teams with Native American-themed mascots change their mascots?

Thanks.

HELL NO...

They should leave it, just becasue a few people have problems with it, they should not ruin things for the rest of us.

That would be just stupid to change things.

^Not exactly the logic I use to get to the same conclusion, but I agree.

Now let's make out.

Well, are we going ot change the Indians? No they call them selfs Indians as well as "Native Americans"

I am irish, why do I not have a Irish American (relitives imagrated from ireleand)

If I can't have it, neither can a very small minority.

Mascots are a sign of school/team spirit- that's a POSITIVE mentality- it's ridiculous to ban that

there's an indian team called the fighting whities. google fighting whities and get the whole story. it was their attempt at getting back at teams with indian themed names. it didnt have the effect they had intended, noone cared.

and to answer the question. hell no. people just need to get over silly things like this. a team can call itself the blue eyed devil honky mother****ers for all i care.

Faye,

Its not about banning mascots in general...

This is tricky: Native Americans are divided over it.
Personally, I think it is degrading because mascots are almost always animals. There is a not-so-nice connotation behind having Native American mascots, in that light. Given the not-so-distant history of considering non-Whites as less than human, some people find it disturbing that we should choose Native Americans as mascots alongside animals. I'm one of those people.

I agree in principle, but the bottom line is that you can't speed up the healing that makes people not care about these things anymore.

The history is too recent, and the wounds have not healed - so of course, such things are still problematic. Stating that they shouldn't be doesn't actually help.

My HS teams were called the Saints- I don't think anyone would see that as degrading

I take offence to that as I was 7 seconds away from being born on the 17th.

Ok: valid points about the animals thing... I still think that's why many Native Americans don't like it though.

There is another consideration, perhaps not as important with Native Americans: some cultures do not see their names the way we do. For some, associating the name of their people with a sport, or a game, is as degrading as taking the 'Lord's' name in vain is for devout Christians.

There are no saints or vikings around today to take offense, but Native Americans are still here, and I think the way they feel about it should be given some attention, rather than brushed off.

I could see if the team was called Drunken Gamblin Redskins or some such racial stereotype w/a negative image.

Most teams though go w/a Warrior type theme- celebrating a source of pride for most tribes.
