Congress ready to celebrate end-of-war party

Quote:
The military’s top generals have warned Iraq is on the cusp of a civil war and that U.S. troops must remain in large numbers until at least next spring. But if the winds suddenly blow a different direction, Congress is ready to celebrate with a $20 million victory party.

Lawmakers included language in this year’s defense spending bill, approved last week, allowing them to spend the money. The funds for “commemoration of success” in Iraq and Afghanistan were originally tucked into last year’s defense measure, but went unspent amid an uptick in violence in both countries that forced the Pentagon to extend tours of duty for thousands of troops.
this is SO wrong on SO many levels ... I'm not sure where to start ... at the 20 MILLION taxpayer DOLLARS to CELEBRATE this obscene terrorist infested QUAGMIRE ... or the hallucinatory Alice-in-wonderland, up-IS-down , right-IS-wrong mindset that POSSESSED the so-called representative that wrote this provision

I think someone should know what the hell they are talking about

In a combat role, I never saw anyone in woodland bdu's. If they were, they must of not been in country for long. We were issued 3 color desert bdu's months before leaving Ft Bragg. Hell, I still had the starch shine my first day in.

Even if they were in a no go unit, within a couple of days they were issued 3 sets.

Don't believe everything you read or hear. Half the shit coming out of Iraq from the media is nothing but a bunch of liberal spin to make it look worst than it is. For every bad story they report, there are ten stories of where the Iraqis are moving closer and closer to becoming a stable country. Have you never wondered why you don't hear anything coming from south Iraq? 99.9% of what you hear about is coming from one region of the country. What about the rest? Its not just desert out there. People are living, working and raising families. Also, you see these polls taken where it looks like the Iraqis want us out of country. Funny that all these polls are taking inside the triangle.

See, this is exactly why I like having combat vets on this board.

There might be no good news coming out of Iraq because reporters keep being kidnapped and killed.

Trite little tidbits like these are part of the problem, not the cure.

And what is your response? A trite little tidbit perhaps?
Use your brain main. We don't get very much information out of Iraq other than some casualty figures, a few pictures of Baghdad, and what our government tells us. Yet, we get to see helicopters giving us overhead views of an Amish funeral. Do you wonder why that is?
I know I do. And the most obvious answers are that:
1. We don't have as many reporters to cover Iraq as we do other parts of the world (This goes back to my previous statement)
2. The US government can do things to control freedom of information in Iraq that it cannot yet do in the US.
Then there is Occam's razor, which basically states that given two equally valid explanations for a phenomenon, one should embrace the less complicated formulation.
So, what is the simpler explanation? The press just wants to report what is bad and they are ignoring everything good in Iraq? Or, they are not seeing anything good to report?
There are far fewer variables if you take the approach that the press isn't seeing anything good to report. Note that this does not imply nothing good is happening, just that nobody is seeing it to pass it on. But since the American public has to depend on news sources for our information, if they don't see it then for us it effectively doesn't happen.

So is the assessment from the chief marine intelligence officer in Iraq "A bunch of liberal spin" ?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...001204_pf.html

Quote:
The chief of intelligence for the Marine Corps in Iraq recently filed an unusual secret report concluding that the prospects for securing that country's western Anbar province are dim and that there is almost nothing the U.S. military can do to improve the political and social situation there, said several military officers and intelligence officials familiar with its contents.

The officials described Col. Pete Devlin's classified assessment of the dire state of Anbar as the first time that a senior U.S. military officer has filed so negative a report from Iraq.

One Army officer summarized it as arguing that in Anbar province, "We haven't been defeated militarily but we have been defeated politically -- and that's where wars are won and lost."
Anbar is fully 1/3 of the country. Wearing rose-colored ideological goggles is what got us into this quagmire ... leaving them on will only make matters worse.

I thank you from bottom of my heart for your service and will always honor my vets . But it is beginning to look like we need to get our troops out of there . I am no anti-war lib for sure , but today it was reported that more troops killed this week than any other time in Iraq so far . Not counting all the injured they don't even mention !

The politics of this war sucks big time ! The commanders seem to have forgotten their to promote advancement . They have tied their hands behind their backs and put 'some ' on death row who shouldn't be there, imo . Some dirty rats in congress tried them before they were even charged .

We are claiming to be fighting terrorist, yet give visas to hindreds of thousands who are members of same religian . Open up our borders where millions a year come in who hate everything about us and stand in our streets flying their foreign flags and telling us just how much !

We need them here in our streets more than overthere . We need them here chunking the criminals back across the border .
