Found this spidey on my pool yesterday. FREAKED me out...

He is scary looking. Has anyone ever seen one like this?

Yep. That's a writing spider like in 'Charlotte's Web'. They are very common and spin very elaborate webs.

I know spiders aren't bugs, and it looks like F&L already guessed the (or a) correct answer, but the first place I always turn with such questions is What's That Bug? Their main spider page quickly identified that as a golden orb weaver, a.k.a. writing spider.

Dang it, F&L beat me to the draw. They're what we call writing spiders, We get those at my house in TN all the time and they really do make some cool webs. Oh, and BTW, they can get HUGE!

Oh, if you have an a thing for art, when I was a kid we used to get black construction paper and take it out to one of the more elaborate webs, we'd then spray the web lightly with silver or white spray paint, and then press the black paper against it where it would stick to the paper. Makes for a really cool modern art piece! Doesn't make the spider very happy, but, they usually abandon them fairly rapidly anyway.....Am I rambling again? Sorry...
