I have this desk calender called "Wild Words from Wild Women" and I usually like the quotes that they use. However, today's has totally infuriated me -- and I think plays into the on-going discussion we have about weight and body image in this forum. Anyway, today Liz Hurley (beautiful model and ex-girlfriend of Hugh Grant) is quoted as saying,

"If I were as fat as [Marilyn] Monroe, I'd kill myself."

It's true that by today's standards Marilyn Monroe would be considered too overweight to be a model or movie star. She wore a size 10/12 and most women we see on tv now wear about 2/3.

Everyone knows that Monroe was one of the most beautiful and sexy women who have ever lived. I think it's horrible that our standards of beauty have become so skewed that women have to starve themselves in order to feel pretty. And Monroe, who was healthy and voluptuous -- who actually had beautiful, soft, womanly curves, is now considered too fleshy while women like Hurley (whose arms are teensy and whose ribs are visible) are celebrated.

It makes me angry, frustrated, confused, and sad. I know it's something that I think about on a regular bases. And now I see my little girls thinking about it too. They should be worried about staying healthy, not being sticks. Ugh.

This absurd infatuation with the ultra-skinny confuses me. Why do we demand that women look like something nature does not provide for?

They are ugly, and unhealthy looking. I can't imagine being attracted to one of these wraiths......heck, it'd be like jacking off with a hand full of chicken bones.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I don't mind skinny gals (considering my current GF tends to fall into that category) but I also find girls that are bigger very attractive.

I mean, I think the point is, does it fit? How does it look? Some girls look better skinny, others look emaciated when they are skinny.
