Protesting Daryl Hannah Pulled From Tree

Quote:
LOS ANGELES -- The actress who played a mermaid in the movie "Splash" has made a media splash in Los Angeles.

Daryl Hannah was holed up in a walnut tree at an urban garden near downtown Los Angeles for much of the morning Tuesday.

Hannah and activist John Quigley were removed from the tree by firefighters in a cherry picker after protesting the eviction of farmers in an urban garden near downtown Los Angeles. Authorities cut away branches as they worked to remove Hannah and Quigley from their perch in the tree towering over the green swath. Hannah and Quigley raised their fists as they were removed.

"Daryl, we're with you!" protester Jenny Flores yelled through a megaphone from a nearby streeet:

Before a firetruck raised officers into the tree, the actress stated by cell phone: "I'm very confident this is the morally right thing to do, to take a principled stand in solidarity with the farmers."

The sheriff is enforcing an eviction order against everyone there. Several people are under arrest on charges including violating that order and obstructing the deputies. Some of them had to be hauled away on stretchers. Authorities moved against garden occupiers about 5 a.m. By late morning, 14 people were arrested inside the farm and another 25 at the support demonstration outside.

Protesters linked arms and sat on train tracks, drawing officers with helmets and batons. Officers dragged some protesters away while other officers forced supporters back.

Inside the garden, firefighters had to cut free protesters who had chained themselves to the walnut tree, barrels filled with concrete and a picnic table.

"It's a massive show of force," said Quigley. "Our goal is to hold as firm as we can, obviously in a nonviolent manner."

He said perhaps 20 farmers and their supporters were in the urban garden.

Deputies used saws to cut down the chain-link fence around the site. Inside the compound, deputies sawed through chains linking garden supporters. Quigley said he could see sparks flying dangerously close to the people's faces and complained that authorities had removed legal observers from the inside the farm.

For years, about 350 farmers have been using the14-acre land to grow crops and flowers. But the property owner, Ralph Horowitz, now wants to build a warehouse.

Supporters of the 350 farmers who have been working the land say it is the largest urban farm in the country. In recent weeks, several celebrities have spent time at the farm in solidarity with the farmers.

they should've just thrown rocks at her to knock her out of the tree.

Yeah, because peacefully demonstrating for a cause a person believes in should get them pelted with rocks.

telling someone what they can do with their property should get you pelted, especially if you invade their property to do it. besides, rocks are better than shotguns.

If the celebrities are so concerned they should cough up the cash for a replacement crop.

I haven't really looked into the details of the issue, but there are local discussions on the news and radio talking about how there's some legal issues involving the sale of the property. From what I understand, even if the legal issues are dealt with, by the time it is brought to court the property will already have been bulldozed. They're trying to delay that so it can be decided what legal rights the farmers and community have on the land.

It's not about a replacement crop, it's about a garden in an underprivledged neighborhood that produces food for people in said neighborhood.

Just because a man let them use his land because he wasn't doing anything with it, doesn't mean he should give up his real estate. What the point of allowing people to own property if its not really theirs.

I did a little reading up on it. The group trying to save it understand that it's his land and he has the right to sell it. They're trying to raise the money and have raised millions already. They're trying to prevent it from being bulldozed so they can purchase it from him.

That seems a little more rational. The first story didn't really explain what was going on.

although, what are the chances he'll want to sell to people who tresspass, try to dictate terms to him, and obstruct his business deals?

I want to go to her house with a shovel and start a garden.

The produce of said garden will be donated to a shelter for black/Jewish/chinese/Pygmie/Lesbian/atheists who have been battered by the evil Enron or some such shit.

See how long before that old has been is on the phone with the Beverly Hills police getting my ass thrown into jail.

The person who owns the land had it stolen illegally through eminent domain.

After a lengthy court battle, he was given the right to repurchase the property for 6 million dollars.

He has offered to sell his private land to these filthy usurpers and supporters of Kelo, but they could only raise about 6 million of the 16 million price.

Can I come over to your place and just start using it?

Does that make it mine?

Well he did exactly that. He gave the smelly masses the opportunity to buy.

They didn't have enough DNC support and since the governor is nomially a republican he refused to set up a state of emergency fund for these thieves.

It really comes down to people who have tons of property (Hannah, Baez, and others) wanting to take the property of someone else.

Pure and simple.

Daryl Hannah has a huge tract of land in California that is completely absent of anything other than squirrels and other lil critters that she could donate.

It's just more Californians believing they're the center of the universe, and trying to get publicity.

It figures the horrible media reporting on this issue would lead people to be against the poor people who farm the land and for the developer who happens to be a real bastard who was given the land in a shady backroom deal.

Not only that, the stupid LAPD pigs started beating people in the streets that were doing nothing but walking down the street.

Lets see.

This guy had his land illegally seized in a fake eminent domain case.

After many years he was able to recover his property.

Then the city gave him the honor of paying more than double what they paid him for the land.

Then he offers the scumbags who were stealing the land the opportunity to buy it.

but they couldn't.

Who is the ******* here?
