Need advice, what to look for, what to do with engine prob
99 neon (stop laughing!)
3spd auto trans (I said stop!) 4 cyl SOHC So here are my symptoms: This week I noticed it stutters and stalls, but never completely stalls out. Occasionally I hear a backfire during it's little fits. This happens when I'm accelerating at medium or low speed, or when I'm climbing a hill at low speed. The funny thing is that if I punch the gas, it'll stutter for a split second and then take off as if everything's fine. The service engine light came on yesterday. Anyone got ideas so I can fix this myself instead of paying out the ass for a mechanic? Anything I should check out?

hmmm, that sounds pretty simple and cheap. I hope that's what it is. I wish we had an Autozone around here.
I don't see how that could cause the backfiring though. ![]()

Also check the easy things like the air filter check and clean carbon buildup in the throttle body andcheck the spark plugs to be sure they are firing. You can either pull them and make sure they don't have any coolant or oil on them.
