This is entirely random, but we were bored at school today and we had this discussion...
If a roman soldier with a sword and shield fought a full grown male lion, who would win? I want to get a more representative view about what the consensus of opinion on this 'issue' is. Please vote |

Once the lion understood the man was being aggressive it'd be over.

Would the Roman be Maximus? Because he killed like five lions at once.

Roman soldier: Scutum = awesome body protection, gladius = good for close quarter combat + inflicting fatal stabbing wounds...

Roman soldier. There is a reason the Christians weren't armed with swords and shields before being thrown to the lions.

The soldier has to get within striking distance to use his sword-the armor doesn't offer much protection against a 3-500 pound body hurling through space...

Frankly, the real winners would likely be the bookies at the Coliseum!

It depends on a lot of things. Does the lion sneak up behind the soldier? Is the soldier really good with his sword, or is he just okay?
All things being equal, I'd bet on the lion.

Lion.
Anyone stupid enough to face a full grown lion with a frickin' sword deserves to be eaten. This thread made me think of that show on Discovery last night about that dude Timothy Treadwell, and his girlfriend, who were eaten by a grizzly bear. Being eaten by a lion or a bear is probably one of the more unpleasant ways one could die. |

If the soldier had a spear, like most roman soldiers did, I think he'd win. With a gladius, I'm not sure.
