Bride calls off wedding, throws party for the homeless
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

EVERETT, Wash. -- A young woman decided to call off her wedding 12 days before the event and her parents knew they'd be stuck with the bill, so they decided to have a party anyway and invited the homeless.

Residents of the Interfaith Family Shelter, housed in a former convent across from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church where the wedding had been scheduled, attended the bash thrown by Katie Hosking, 22, a medical assistant at the Everett Clinic, and her parents, Bill and Susan Hosking of Lake Stevens.

"They had a DJ and really good music. It was a warm, friendly atmosphere. The food was delicious. It was a nice break with people not worrying about anything for one night," shelter manager Carol Oliva said. "Toward the end of the evening, they packed up all the leftover food and we got to bring it back to the shelter."

One homeless woman got her son out of a wheelchair, "took that child out on the dance floor and picked him up and danced with him. It was a beautiful sight. Our kids realized that even when something bad happens, somebody else has something worse," Susan Hosking said. "It was an eye-opener."

[Now that's compassion ]

Ain't got no home
A-no place to roam
Ain't got no home
A-no place to roam
I'm a lonely boy
I ain't got a home

I got a voice
I love to sing
I sing like a girl
And I sing like a frog
I'm a lonely boy
I ain't got a home

I ain't got a man
I ain't got a son
I ain't got a daughter
I ain't got no one
I'm a lonely girl
I ain't got a home

I ain't got a mother
I ain't got a father
I ain't got a sister
Not even a brother
I'm a lonely frog
I ain't got a home

Oh, what you say to me
Please say to me
Oh, what you say to me
Please say to me
I'm a lonely frog
I ain't got a home

Homeless people are gross. They should have given them a lecture on being responsible citizens and urged them to get jobs insted of throwing a party for them.

Yeah, like the responsible citizens who live at home with mommy and daddy at age 28.

I go the food pantry and help homeless people every other week. I've been doing this since I retired. Wedding #7 (IF I do it) will be quite some time away...maybe a year or two...I have some things I have to do first

But seriously,

Homeless typically fall into a few categories. Most are either mentally disturbed and need to be in mental instutitions ASAP with proper treatment, or they are under severe addictions and need assistance to rid them of their addictions. Occasionally there are some hard-luck stories, and then there are your runaways. Then of course many who hold a sign on a freeway off ramp aren't really homeless but do it as an easy way to make money of suckers.

The truly homeless need compassion and love, not scourn or ridicule, not enabling, not "clean needles" or "homeless credit cards" (San Francisco has come up with some doozies)

It must be nice to have parents rich enough to pay your way thru so much school.

Or maybe you qualify as a minority and have been given the money to go to school.

I sure you wouldn't like to earn your college money the way poor, white males do ... come join me in Uncle's Sam's Traveling Circus (aka the US Army).

Indeed. Im working nearly 9 hours a day, everyday this summer (save two days every other week), just to make enough to cover living expenses at college. Ill then have to get 1... maybe even 2 jobs on top of my class's... And on top of this, I have the knowledge that If I dont do well in school, and get a good job during school, or upon graduation, I could easily spend 10 years barely making ends meet. But I certainly wont leech off my parents, and I certainly wont auction my morals on the army chopping block.

No offense NJ. Ill be honest--Its tempted me, as Im sure it is all those who dont come from well furnished households.

On top of that, Im currently being taxed nearly 20% a paycheck... Thats 150$ every other week... Which is somewhat distressing to me... But so it goes for the bottom feeders of this country who have to hold up the wealthy and well furnished.

My parents aren't rich nor have they ever given me so much as a dime for my schooling. I've paid for everything myself. Save your BS line for someone else.

And why are you attacking me when you've had mummy dear paying your way for you your entire life?

Or maybe I worked my ass off and put myself through school. Unlike you I pay my own way, I don't sit around demanding welfare and free schooling.

Boo hoo, cry me a river. I grew up poor as hell and I made my own way without help for others. I worked 80 hour weeks in the summer, I got $30,000 scholorships, I took out loans, I paid for classes on credit cards and I never went around crying about it and being jealous like you do. Life is tough, deal with it, stop your whining. Spare us and go cry to mommy.
