Three drown in SUV accident

NEWARK, New Jersey (AP) -- Three women returning from a birthday party drowned when the driver lost control of a Jeep Cherokee and went off the road, plunging into a river as the women frantically called a friend on a cell phone instead of dialing 911.

Trapped inside the sinking SUV, the women were unable to tell their friend where they were and although their friend scrambled to use another phone to call police, authorities didn't immediately know where the vehicle had ended up.

"They had us on the line while they were talking to the individual in the car," Newark police Detective Todd McClendon said. "They were unclear on where they were."

Um, climb out the windows? I understand they may have been panicking and whatnot, but is it really that hard?

Maybe the electric windows shorted out when the car hit the water.

Why do they always have to point out that it's an SUV? would they be any less dead if they had driven a toyota celica into a lake and called a friend instead of 911?

Hey, that Jeep is just like mine.... note to self, don't drive into lake, car won't float.

They actually manufacture a device you can hook to your key chain in such situations. It comes to a point which is what is necessary to break the windows from the inside. A brass plumb bob would do the trick.

The water pressure probably exploded their ears before they had a chance to drown.

When the pressure equalized (and it would do this pretty fast), they could have opened the doors. If the current prevented this, then they could have opened the rear hatch. If this didn't work, then a very good, hard kick against any of the windows except the windshield would do the trick.
