Thumbs up Amsterdam only prosecuting for 3+ kilos

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/3316547.stm

"Smugglers arrested with less than three kilos of cocaine at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport will not be prosecuted under plans by the Dutch Government. The policy is designed to ease pressure on the judicial system due to a rising number of arrests of drug couriers... Schiphol is a key transport hub in Europe About 150 cocaine smugglers are arrested there each month... Last year, the government stopped prosecuting drug couriers carrying less than one-and-a-half kilos, but those with larger amounts were sent home with a court summons on the understanding they would be prosecuted in their home countries. Still, extra courts and prison cells were not enough to deal with the drug traffickers."

Most of them come from the Antilles, where there are no checks whatsoever on flights to Amsterdam. The Antilles government says they can't afford it, so they simply let anyone just board those planes.

There have been flights where 50 people were carrying coke...they're entering faster than they can be caught.

Help me understand this, because I've never been clear. Does Amsterdam have the most liberal drug laws or does it span the entire nation? Are different counties (is this the correct word?) allowed to define their own drug policies? Seems that the open border with say, Germany, that the Germans would have a BIG problem with drugs running across their border that easily.

Counties? No such thing. We have provinces, who can pass their own rules concerning certain topics, but the drug laws are on a national scale.

Even the smallest town has at least one coffeshop. So no, it's not just Amsterdam, it's the entire country.

As for the Germans, they're seeing how well the dutch policy works, and are thinking of adopting it.

Thanks for clearing that up. Provinces was the word I was looking for.

Actually, it's a pretty OK place. The peeps are 10X friendlier than the Germans, lots of flowers, good shocks, chicks with big hooters, good English, and clean. Did I mention they make good struts and shocks? Only downside I can think of is that it's flatter than Kansas, and Amsterdam always smelled like urine.

Me and a buddy drove via ferry from Lakenheath RAF in the UK to Wiesbaden. I can remember the looks his 5.0 liter Mustang got as we drove across Holland, but in Europe 5.0 liters might as well be a big block.

no ****, when I was around 19 I saw my first 4.6L V6 chevy van, i thought that must be the largest engine ever. I wasnt' into cars at all then, but growing up in holland, 2 liters was big to me. Most cars are between 1.3L and 1.8L, generally....

2 years later I had a 454BB Firebird

Previous owner had dropped a chevy BB into that '69 bird. It was a pretty awesome car, old ppl wouldnt cross the road if i was waiting for a light

There's actually a lot of classics over in Europe, you'd be surprised. Many of them have been converted to run liquified petrol gas, which is a cheaper type of gas which is readily available. Helps cover the costs of running it, at 16mpg or less

Do you still own this? Dear lord man, a couple rides in that and most wouldn't need Viagra. That car belongs stateside!

I did notice a lot of American iron from Germany to Scandanavia, but none in France or further south.

frenchies aren't into the whole international thing, they stick to their own cars

I had it for about half a year, decided it wasn't for me, traded it in for a modded 289 '67 mustang coupe , did 16mpg on gasoline ($5/gallon at that time). Then after that I had a renault 19 for a few months and then got a '94 Mini. I had all of these within the span of a year

I'm not worthy. Those were two awesome vehicles. Can't speak for the Renault or the Mini.
