'Peter Pan' Seems Awfully Grown Up in New Movie

Quote:
By Jill Serjeant

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rarely has Peter Pan seemed so grown up. If you thought "Peter Pan" was just a kid's fantasy about cute crocodiles, tiny fairies, mustachio-twirling villains and swashbuckling pirates, then think again.

The latest movie version of the 100-year-old story about the boy who refuses to grow up is intended to be as scary as it is enchanting and to have something for everyone.

"I wanted to do the original 'Peter Pan.' I went to the play, the book and (British author) J.M. Barrie's life. There is a lot to it; it's an adventure, a tragedy, a romance," said director P.J. Hogan.

"The play is thematically and psychologically rich ... I really wanted to be true to the original story, which is not all sweetness and light. I think it is a surprise to people because they are so used to the 1953 Disney version, which did remove all darkness," Hogan told reporters.

Well that's cool I guess, I like these kinds of stories better with the "dark" elements included. Although I don't see myself rushing out to see it.

I thought a Peter Pan was a wash basin in a cat house. What goes on?

Next they'll claim that Moby Dick isn't a venereal disease, it's a Goddam fish or something.

I'm very glad to see that it's not a remake of the movie, but a new adaptation of the story. Kudos to the creative team for that decision.

I think it looks pretty cool. My son's eyes lite up when the preview came on before Spooky Daddy Daycare aka Haunted Mansion (which was lousy BTW).

The previews just look bad, but like you jed, I like the darker take on the children stories.

There was a video game, which they were going to make into a movie, which has since gotten the axe, which I would have loved to see. It was called Alice, and the basic story is that Alice is in an asylum after seeing her parents die in a fire at their home. Wonderland is being taken over/corrupted by the queen, and they need Alice's help to save them. Wonderland has turned darker, things are corrupted, many of its inhabitants are starving/enslaved/you name it.

The video game was great looking, pseudo gothic, veru brooding...
