American Movies Filmed in Czech Republic... or didn't you know?
http://www.myczechrepublic.com/pragu...locations.html
Shanghai Knights 2002, USA/UK/Czech Republic Parts of the movie Shanghai Knights starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson were filmed in the Czech Republic. The country that is a popular filming destination was chosen this time to stand in for London and England in the late 1800's. Filming locations included Kutná Hora, Karlovy Vary and Prague and one scene was also filmed at the Hluboká Castle in Southern Bohemia. Jackie Chan and the other crew were in the Czech Republic in April and May 2002 for filming. Jackie wrote an insightful diary about the filming and his time in the Czech Republic. Buy Shanghai Knights on VHS or DVD from Amazon.com XXX 2002, USA American action movie starring Vin Diesel, Samuel L. Jackson and Asia Argento. Most of the movie takes place in Prague and the surrounding areas. This is one of the few films where Prague stars for itself. The beginning of the movie was shot on the Old Town Square and in Michalská street. The arrival of XXX in Prague was shot in Nerudova. He later walks with the Czech agent along Celetná, close to the Powder Tower. The headquarters of the Czech police are in the Schwarzenberg Palace on Hradčanské náměstí, near the Prague Castle. XXX has lunch with Asia Argento in the Municipal House (Obecní dům) and soon after runs away along the stairs Radnické schody to end up being trapped in Nerudova and taken to the Rudolfinum. The night scene on the motorbike was shot on the Most Legií bridge near the National Theater. The end of the movie was shot along the Vltava, arriving from Vyšehrad. XXX jumps on the motorboat close to the Palackého Bridge. The army arrives in Kampa and follows the scenes from the Charles Bridge. XXX comes out from the river on the breakwater of the Charles Bridge. Buy XXX on VHS or DVD from Amazon.com Hart's War 2002, USA This Bruce Willis film set in World War II was filmed entirely in the Czech Republic. Besides Prague, filming locations include the town of Milovice, which until 1991 was used as a training camp for the Soviet Army during the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia, and served the same purpose for a good part of the 20th century (a training camp for the Austrian Army was set up there as early as 1904). The train attack was filmed in Zvoloněves. Buy Hart's War on VHS or DVD from Amazon.com Making Love (Canone inverso) 1999, Italy A very nice movie by Ricky Tognazzi, the son of one of the most famous Italian actors, Ugo Tognazzi. The beginning of the movie was filmed near the Kampa Island and the first meeting between Costanza and Jeno is in the pub O'Che's in Liliová Street 14. Sophie's first concert is in the Tyl or Estates Theatre, Ovocný trh 1, Prague 1. Other scenes were shot on the Charles Bridge and at the Main Train Station. A fight in the movie was filmed on Hradčanské náměstí and the nazi headquarters are in the Černín Palace on Loretánské náměstí. Other scenes were filmed outside of Prague, such as in the spa colonnade in Mariánské Lázně. Les Miserables 1998, France One of the most recent movies taken from the famous book by Victor Hugo was filmed in Czech Republic. Most of the movie was filmed in the city of Kutná Hora and the villages of Žatec and Vrbno. The court where the main character admits he is Jean Valjean is the Castle of Trója in the Prague suburbs. The house of Jean Valjean in Paris is at Hradčanské náměstí 8. We already know this house...it was Mozart's house in the movie Amadeus... Lamarque's funeral was shot on the same square. Buy Les Miserables on VHS or DVD from Amazon.com Mission: Impossible 1996, USA A large part of this 1996 movie was shot in Prague, mostly near the Charles Bridge. Under the bridge there is the Kampa Island, which is also accessible from the bridge through the staircase. In the square below a car explodes at the beginning of the movie and Tom Cruise watches the scene from the bridge. At the end of the square on your left you might recognize the wooden gate used at the beginning of the movie after the party. The party was filmed inside the National Museum on Wenceslas Square. Near the wooden gate if you proceed along the river you can see another black wooden gate where a person was killed. Other shots were taken in the Municipal House at Náměstí Republiky, and in the buildings nearby. A scene was also shot in the Old Town Square but the restaurant that will later explode was built only for the movie. Buy Mission: Impossible on VHS or DVD from Amazon.com The Shooter 1995, Czech Republic/France/Spain/UK/USA This is an action movie with Dolph Lundgren from 1995. It was filmed in the Castle area, in the Old Town, in a building at the beginning of Národní Třída near the Adria Palace. The Rudolfinum and the roofs of the Academy of Sciences near the National Theatre were also used. Some night shots were taken near the Charles Bridge. Immortal Beloved 1994, UK/USA Isabella Rossellini, Gary Oldman, Valeria Golino. The composer L. V. Beethoven leaves his patrimony to his Immortal Beloved. Anton Schindler, the executor, must find who this mysterious woman is. Filmed in Prague and surrounding areas. At the beginning of the movie the funeral starts from the Schwarzenberk Palace, Hradčanské náměstí 1, just in front of the Castle, to end in the Church of Saint Nicholas, Malá Strana. Beethoven walks with one of his women in the Valdštejn Gardens, Malá Strana and alone in Maltézské náměstí while we listen to his monologue. In the Philosophical Library of the Strahov Monastery he speaks with a Chancellor and the Ninth Symphony was held in the Estates or Tyl Theater, Železná 11, Staré Město. Buy Immortal Beloved on VHS or DVD from Amazon.com Kafka 1991 - France/USA This movie came out in 1991 starring Jeremy Irons and Theresa Russell and it shows us a wonderful Prague in black and white. It was mainly shot in Malá Strana, on the Charles Bridge, in the Old Town, in the Jewish Cemetery. In Mariánské náměstí you can see the New Town Hall used in the film as Kafka's working place. Buy Kafka on VHS or DVD from Amazon.com Amadeus 1984, USA This film won many Oscars back in 1984. The director, Milos Forman, of Czech origin but emmigrated to the USA during the communist regime, chose Prague for this movie. Amadeus was filmed mostly in the Hradčany and Malá Strana areas. Let's start from Hradčany. The Theological Hall of the Strahov Monastery was used to shoot a plot of the court members against Mozart. This hall is one of the two libraries of the Monastery that are opened to the public. We are now in the square in front of the Castle where on the opposite end at number 8 there is the building used as Mozart's house in the film. Part of the square as well as the Karmelitská Street nearby were used several times. Let's get closer to the Castle where just on the left side of the main entrance we can see the Archbishops' Palace. The balls of the Viennese court were shot in the halls of the first floor. I don't think the Archbishops will let you in, though. We continue down to Malá Strana along Nerudova Street where at the number 18 a wig shop was shot where Mozart stops for shopping. In a street parallel to Nerudova, Thunovská, near the British Embassy, the narrower part of the street with the arch was filmed several times. We are now in the Malostranské náměstí; to the right of the front of the Saint Nicholas church, the covered passage leading to the Trziste street might look familiar... We now go to Valdštejnské náměstí; the huge Baroque façade belongs to the Waldštejn Palace and one scene of a court audience was shot here but you can't get inside: it's the Senate. You can take a look at the nice gardens of the palace open from April to October where an outdoor concert was shot. Near the Charles Bridge some streets were filmed: Míšeňská, U Lužického Semináře, near the Hotel At the Three Ostriches (U tří pštrosů) and in the hotel itself. A Viennese market was placed in the Maltézské náměstí and near the Church of the Virgin Mary under the Chain where now you see the Embassy of Malta, before 1989 there was the Museum of Musical Instruments, which was Salieri's house in the film. In the movie Salieri looks out of the window and watches a ball in the Palace in front, which is the French Embassy in the little square nearby. Let's go to Staré Město and the Husova Street where the wedding and the funeral of the composer were filmed in the Church of Saint Gilles (Svaty Jiljí). (I suggest to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the brightness of this Baroque). At the end of the Železná street there is the Theatre of the Estates, or Tyl's Theater, which was used for the opera in the movie. For these scenes Forman used only the light of candles for a total of 5,000; 30 students were hired to light the candles for every shot. In reality Mozart chose this theatre for the world premiere of Don Giovanni in 1787. The entrance of the theatre was filmed in front of the National Theatre on the island at the Žofín Palace. To be able to see where the last scenes of the film were shot you should take metro C (red) to the Vyšehrad stop; walk along the Congress Hall and enter the Baroque Gate called Tabor. A little further you will see the Leopold's Gate used for the scenes after the funeral. I would suggest to see the movie after or before your trip to Prague...

Prague's nice but a bit dirty. We stayed in the old Jewish quarter when I was about 12. Visit the Jewish museum, (allegedly the last preserved synagogue in Europe) which was designated by Hitler to be a museum for a race gone from Europe. See their fine collection of those silver Jewish nose picking things.

A stuntman died in Prague while shooting XXX. A lot of commercials are shot there too, it's cheap.

If I'm not mistaken, Underworld was filmed there too, but I'm too lazy to look it up.

One thing I would also point out, another reason C.R. has been chosen for filming is because of a glut of unemployed talent. Czech Cinema was highly developed in the Communist era. After the velvet revolution, the heavily subsidized film industry went broke, but the studios remain. It may be cheaper to make a film in, say Ukraine, but the access to studios and an abundent talent pool of film technicians are hard to find.
Ironically enough, the great experimental filmakers who built the Czech film industry in the 70's and 80's (Jeri Menzel, Vera Checlova, etc.) have vanished. Today the same talent is harnessed by the American and West European film industries.

Pretty old threat
![]() Just thought I'll extend the list of movies made in Prague, CR... James Bond - Casino Royale Wanted The Brothers Bloom The Brothers Grimm Everything is Illuminated Oliver Twist Tristan & Isolde The Bourne Identity A Knight's Tale The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Hellboy The Omen (2006) The Illusionist Hannibal Rising The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian ..And many others. Prague really is a beautiful city. It has changed a lot since 90's (in a good way). However, shooting movies here is no longer as cheap as it used to be. Ukraine, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and other East European countries are cheaper. |
