Post Florida student suspended for safer-sex costume

Quote:
KISSIMMEE, Florida (AP) -- Osceola High School administrators thought a student's Halloween costume was more trick than treat. So they suspended her.

Lanessa Riobe, 16, was told to go home Friday after wearing a T-shirt decorated with condoms. Lanessa said she decided on the costume after seeing safe-sex commercials on television.

"A lot of my friends are sexually active," Riobe told the Orlando Sentinel. "I tell them, if you're going to do it, be safe."

I agree, the girl should be commended not disciplined for it.

I suppose we dont want to prevent AIDS and the countless other STDs out there. I guess we dont want to solve the teen pregnancy epidemic.

These school administrators need to remove their heads from their asses.

How is wearing a shirt with condoms promoting safe sex? Especially when you're just 15?

To me, thats more of a joke than anything else.

I hope she's not punished, but I do feel sending her home/making her change was the right move.

Facist....kidding.

Many schools like to go with the "out of sight out of mind" approach to sex.

Fact is more and more kids under 16 are having sex. Promoting safe sex is the smartest thing to do regardless of you thoughts on the issue. Ignoring it or promoting absenence aren't going to work.

I don't disagree. Promoting safe and safer sex I feel ARE a job that schools need to have a hand in.

However, that needs to be done in a more sterile/serious manner than parody or joke.

Like I said, a costume like that easily can been seen as joking, poking fun, or a soruce of ridicule. Safer sex isn't the issue. The issue is a student, who either was making a statement or having a laugh (that is unknown) but doing so in a way that isn't really appropriate.
