Question How do you view Chicago?

I ask this question because I am very interested in how non-Chicago area residents view my home town. Chicago was once the second largest city in the US, thought recently it was surpassed by Los Angeles. Yet there seems to be little knowledge of the place to people living outside the city. Or am I mistaken?

I have considered these things to be what the rest of the world sees as being what Chicago is best known for:
1) Chronically loosing sports teams
2) Al Capone
3) St Valentines Day Massacre
4) Mayor Daley and his retarded son, the current Mayor
5) Corruption: Dead people rising from the dead to vote on election day.
6) The stockyards (which no longer exist by the way)
7) The railroad hub of the US
8) Deep dish pizza (incidently I can't eat pizza. It makes me ill)
9) The nations busiest and most overcrowded airport
10) Insanely cold winters

Well thats the bad of it, yet I will also say that there is a lot of interesting things in the city. It has miles of beautiful lakefront, beaches where people actually swim in the summer, Navy Pier, Museums (Field museum is not to be missed, Museum of Science and industry is also cool) Chinatown is a lot of fun any time of year. Its also a city full of history. You can see where the original May Day was celibrated where workers held a meeting to have an 8 hour day and a bomb exploded killing several police. Four organizers were later hanged. You can see the most interesting University Campus, the University of Chicago (one of my favorite overlooked sites.) On the campus you can see where the first nuclear chain reaction occurred which led to the atomic bomb. You can also see the open air market on Maxwell Street (on Halstead St., just South of UIC.

Anyway I asked this question only because I am trying to understand how others see the city.

I know that the character of Indiana Jones is based on a real-life professor at the University of Chicago (I don't know if he's still alive or not, though).

I view it as a helluva lot cleaner than New York city.
with some great clubs for Rock music.
Chicago is great, but quite cold and windy in the winter.
My walks from union station to Randolf & Michigan avenue in the dead of winter really really sucked.

i view it... typically form high over lake Michigan. I've been through the airport twice, that's it. One of those two times involved an extensive layover due to snow.

Bummer, I don't qualify to answer. I was born there, lived there a while and believe it to be a very cool place.

Cool city to visit. THe things that amaze me are the beaches in a metro area, the (relative) cleanliness, and the ability to walk around downtown in a vast area while still feeling safe. You can be in one area, drive 15 minutes, and still be in a nice area.

Also, great restaurants and clubs to enjoy good music.
