Exclamation Save Historical Bridges!

Historic Iron and Steel Bridges
Bridges tend to be in the nicest of places! I'd even go so far as to say that bridges like the ones featured on these pages enhance the beauty of their surroundings.

Those of you who see more in iron/steel truss bridges than simply a help in traversing a river or ravine may share my opinion that these old bridges are being replaced by modern bridges way too fast. The replacements rarely come close to the beauty and charm of the replaced.

Crossing an old metal truss bridge by motor vehicle can be a real stimulant to the senses. Unlike their typical modern replacements, you can't help but notice a metal bridge as you approach and cross. The arrangements of the weathered iron or steel of the structures are nothing less than architectural and engineering works of art. The clickity-clack of wooden board decks or the singing of open metal grate decks often provide songs of crossing on old bridges.

I'd like to have a collection of these historic wonders, but since bridges are a bit heavy and large, I'll settle for a photograph collection. Here are a few samples.

These Disappearing Bridges Pages feature bridges, mostly from rural, Western Pennsylvania. And although the emphasis is on truss bridges, other styles are represented when warranted.

Restore them, if they become a hazard.
