WWI veteran turns 105
WWI veteran turns 105
January 05, 2003 FATHER Time might have given him a scare, but one of Australia's last surviving World War I veterans Ted Smout today celebrated his 105th birthday. Mr Smout is recovering at the Greenslopes Private Hospital after a run in with a grandfather clock just before Christmas. The World War I veteran, who served with the army medical corps in France and Belgium in the Great War, received cuts and bruises when the 1.8 metre clock fell on him at his Brisbane home. Still recovering in hospital Mr Smout today said his birthday had been a "pretty good day". "I had a huge cake and all the family around so it was good," he said from hospital. Mr Smout's accident occurred just before Christmas while he was winding up the large clock. Last week a wisecracking Mr Smout said he had come off "second best" when the clock pinned him to the floor for 20 minutes before he managed to call an ambulance. He is expected to stay in hospital for another couple of weeks. Mr Smout, who received an OAM in 1978, and 104-year-old Eric Abraham are Queensland's remaining living WWI veterans. In 1998 he was awarded the Chevalier Legion d'Honneur by the government of France as part of the celebrations of the Australian breakthrough at Le Hemel on the western front 80 years ago. AAP

Interesting story, pointless war.
On an added note, Australia is the best ally America ever had or probably ever will have. |

Say what? The part about the allies or WWI? Australia has been a more consistent ally than any other, including Britain. Even the most limited knowledge of WWI history reveals the fact that it was the most pointless wastes of human life in history. |

The Australia part, and thanks for clearing that up. I meant no disrespect with the question, I just wasn't sure where you were coming from with that.
