The Extremely Large Telescope

Quote: The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is planning on building a massive – and I do mean massive – telescope in the next decade. The European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) is a 42-meter telescope in its final planning stages. Weighing in at 5,000 tonnes, and made up of 984 individual mirrors, it will be able to image the discs of extrasolar planets and resolve individual stars in galaxies beyond the Local Group! By 2018 ESO hope to be using this gargantuan scope to stare so deep into space that they can actually see the Universe expanding!

When I was very young, a long long time ago, my first *real* boss said something to me that warped my brain. He said that someday we might be able to see SO FAR AWAY that we could actually see AROUND the universe and then we might get to see the back of our heads. Of course, we'd see a very long time ago so we'd effectively be looking at our past.

My brain is still throbbing from that one. Ouch. Fun to think about though once you get used to the pain.

Since the universe is expanding, I doubt we will someday see around the universe.

I think they're compensating. For something.

There's no imagination in the naming of things anymore. It used to be the names of things were created in such a way as top bestow a hint of character on them. Now everythings just 'the very large this' or 'the extremely large the other'...

Still I suppose if that trend continues it could get interesting...

Coming in 2015 'the just ****ing enormous telescope' and the 'look at the size of that bastard array'.
