Fresh & Easy / Tesco - Yes or No?

Anyone else do their grocery shopping here? I've been here a couple times, and damn is it cheap, but there's something about it that bugs me.

Anyway I did some research and apparently Fresh & Easy's parent company "Tesco" is known as the "Wal-Mart of Britain" and has been caught breaking food safety laws in several different countries.

Cellular and Dogberry, what are your thoughts on these guys?

Americans - do you shop here?

There is a Fresh and Easy being built not too far from my house, and I'm excited for it to open.

Don't they focus more on local-grown and organic stuff there?

Supposedly...that's what they claim on their site. I want definitive proof. Because evidently they've been caught exceeding the pesticide limits on their "organic" foods in Britain.

Thanks. I'll keep my ears out for more info on that.
We have Trader Joes here, which I LOVE, but there isn't one closer than an hour and 15 minutes from the house.

I'd shop there all the time if one was closer.

I dont shop there. Seems too wasteful with all their individual packaging. If they had more bulk food and produce aisles and I knew their meat was butchered in house, I'd consider it. I wont even get fresh meat from Trader Joe's and I love that place because they don't butcher on site. Fry's, Sprouts and Albertson's do so I shop there.

I agree. And I love TJ's too.

I don't like the idea of buying meat there either, but they sell these pre-cooked chicken breasts which is ultra convenient for me (Fresh N Easy I mean).

Trader Joes has a great wine selection and good Thai Peanut Sauce.

It's a West Coast thing, apparently.

We're just really psyched cuz we're getting a Food Lion, or as my mother in law calls it "Lion King."

If it's anything like its parent company you can be sure the 'local produce' line is just greenwash. Tesco is cheap, though not as cheap as ASDA, which is in fact owned by Wal-mart.

Like most gigantic corporations they don't really give a **** about ethics. They are also expert at tax dodging but will sue the living shit out of anyone who says so...allegedly.

We had Food Lion in Texas, but all of them shut down after the expose on some of the things that were going on.

For instance, they'd take meat that was about to expire, wash it with bleach solution, repackage it and put a new label on it with a new expiration date.
They didn't last long once that came out.

I never shopped there to begin with, but after that, no thanks!

Holy cow, it seems as if there was a bit of fabrication going on. This never made the news, or at least not that I can remember. Food Lion sued and apparently won.

I hereby retract my statements. It seems as if they were set up! Wow, interesting read. Long but interesting.

Cool. That's a relief, since we used to shop at the one near the beach house and did buy meat there.

Food Lion is OK as far as prices go (I used to shop there when I lived in Virginia). Not sure what other supermarkets are in your neck o' the woods, though, Saison.

One of my friends works in the 'burbs, so she shops at Giant. The prices don't seem to warrant my hopping a bus and trekking all the way to Broomall, though. Between Aldi, Save-A-Lot, Shop-n-Bag, and Fresh Grocer I do pretty well as far as savings go as it is.

We do most of our shopping at Acme and Safeway. (I should correct that, DAVE does most of our shopping - ten minutes in a grocery store and I'm ready to start throwing things!)

We try to buy organic meat, so that's a challenge to find here for a reasonable price. Also, not sure if it's just DE or what, but the stores we frequent have weird selections of things that we normally buy, so Dave has to hunt around for the specific thing he's looking for. (He's an extremely picky eater, so that makes it complicated...)
