Spain's fighting bulls come out running

PAMPLONA, Spain - Spain's largest fighting bulls lived up to their fearsome reputation, goring two and crushing at least seven people as thousands of daredevils sprinted down narrow streets Sunday in Pamplona's annual running of the bulls.


The second of eight bull runs in the weeklong San Fermin festival involved the black and reddish-colored Miura bulls, renowned as the largest fighting bulls in Spain.

As they charged down the 800-yard route, two of them fell and, appearing to lose their way, turned on the crowd of runners. Two people were gored.

Despite the animals' size, experts admire the Miura breed for their power and grace, which inspired legendary Italian car maker Ferruccio Lamborghini to name one of his most famous sports cars after the animals.

PAMPLONA, Spain, July 5 (UPI) -- Activists ran through Pamplona, Spain, wearing only plastic horns and red scarves to protest what they say is the cruelty of the Running of the Bulls.
The sixth annual Running of the Nudes, organized by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals-Europe, was offered as a human alternative to the bull events, PETA said in a news release.

"Hundreds of nude runners exposed all in Pamplona (Thursday) to let tourists know that there is a thrilling alternative to inciting a stampede among panicked animals who are later tormented and slaughtered in bullfights," PETA Director Poorva Joshipura said. "The Running of the Nudes is a win-win-win situation -- participants have fun, Pamplona gets tourists and bulls live to see another Spanish sunrise."
