Corporal punishment in schools

I have no idea if you have it in the US or Canada (Or Aus) but it was abolished in the UK in about 1984.

Personally i knew some teachers who got a kick out of it but it had the positive effect that very very few kids got expelled and rowdy behaviour was kept to a minimum.

I cant be bothered with a poll.

^ What 86Dude said.

It also showed the true colors of some educators pretty fast...there were some sick ****ers teaching then. To some, it seemed like a game to find a new way to wallop a kids ass.

Corporal punishment had its problems, but I think the absence of it has created more.
Teenagers brains have problems making correct judgements, this is well documented by researchers. I think fear and pain help keep that in check with some of them.

I think the problem isn't a lack of corporal punishment, but rather a lack of consequence. In my day, misbehaving meant no supper, a beating, having to bust your ass doing hard labor around the farm, being grounded (no TV, no phone, no friends).
And it didn't take a beating to make you come to your senses. Knowing your parents were let down, and how pissed off they were, and how hard they had it without having to raise an ungrateful kid, etc. worked at developing a conscious, and compassion.
Nowadays it seems the worse punishment a kid sees is being sent to their rooms, which these days offer more entertainment than a casino.

Yes good points.

I was thinking of this thread when i started this one http://www.discussanything.com/forum...=1#post1542404

Less need to call the cops if there was a higher form of punishment.

When I was at school in Glasgow, being at a boy's school, the teachers applied a loud, berating, almost drill sargent-like voice. You were addressed by your last name and if reprimanded you were standing in a pool of sweat before the class which is dead silent..getting a tirade on your character and a look at your dismal future if you weren't pulling your socks up.
It wasn't uncommon to be suspended for a week if you showed any subordination, depending on the head's mood. I've been taken out to the hall and have had a teacher going close to ballistic, literally spitting out his contempt. And all for being unable to control my laughter in class. It was nervous laughter as well. Just couldn't stop myself. In fact getting talked down to only encouraged students to act out. Kind of like a badge of honour to go through that without starting to cry.

Here in Canada, teachers can't seem to do much but try to teach over an assortment of ADD aflicted students and/or those who are just plain out of control. They get sent out the class if anything, but that still leaves a quarter of *******s still in the room.

No amount of punishment could disuade a true alpha male trapped in a kids body. It sure sucked being the only beta when I was a kid.

Especially because the paddle used was in publec view in the office. Scary looking piece of material.

Kids need to be a little scared once in a while. Time has shown again and again what a lack of fear does for both animals and people alike.

I remember when I was in school and this bastard of a teacher was yelling at the class. I was in the front row, preoccupied with using the back of my pen to flick bits of eraser at people.

As he was blood red from yelling, I accidentally flicked a piece of eraser in his face. At which point he totally lost it. Fortunately he didn't know where it came from, but it took every ounce of will power I had to keep from laughing.

We had a teacher like that and he through his paddle through the window. They didn't have the kind of regs or background checks back in the 70's they do now. That guy would hold us without food and water (the entire class) if we got out of line. Later me and a couple of kids slashed his tires.

Teachers in my school would throw board rubbers at us, one teacher picked me up and slugged me in the stomach, no complaints i deserved it.

Detention meant detention after school not during like like they get now and more formal corporal punishment was the cane for the worst offenders.

Not sure if girls ever got it though There needs to be something higher than just excluding kids which serves no purpose at all.

My grade school principal had what I called "the vulcan neck pinch" where he'd dig into your neck/shoulder area and totally incapacitate you with pain.

In Canada, I learned very quickly that they don't use the word rubber for erasers.

My form 1 history teacher pelted us with chalk. Sometimes richocheting from head to head.
