Thumbs down Joan Baez Banned At Walter Reed

Last week John Mellencamp gave a concert at Walter Reed Army hospitial for all the soldiers at the hospital wounded in Iraq.

Mellencamp asked folk sing Joan Baez [who appears on his latest album Freedom's Road]to appear with him at the hospitial, the Army said "no" and gave no reason why.

A quick google search on Joan Baez Bush will give you the reasons. Anti-war demonstrations, performed at "camp casey," the usual disagrees with the Party so the entire government now has to be turned against them mentality.

maybe it's because they want to maintain something called morale. wounded soldiers don't need to be bothered with shitty music that carries a tired, unrealistic, inflammatory message. the soldiers know how a good portion of the american public views the war, and they know of the ongoing debate in the federal government...they have as much access to news as you do. but joan baez doesn't have a right to perform there, and the installation is more than within it's rights to tell her to go away. they should have given john mellencamp the boot too.

these servicemen have survived greivous injuries injuries in combat...the last thing we need is for them to be bored to death by this 'music'.

This show wasn't political though.

Mellencamp has been outspoken against the war [I saw him in concert in '03 whe he was very vocal against Bush during the show] and they let him perform at Walter Reed.

Baez is on a anti-racism song on his album ,so it's logical that he would have her on the show.

The show doesn't have to be, the GOP has politicized the military. And I'm sure they still hold a grudge over the whole playing at the protest rally outside Bush's ranch. It is the difference between arguing against the message and attacking the messenger.

This demagogic, illogical, hyperbolic post prefectly illustrates why I will never be a conservative.

vindex makes some good points because Joan was always more about her message than the music, similar to Rage Against the Machine. She was an excellent vocalist at one time though, far better than that utterly boring chump, John Cougar. Maybe they could pick songs for her to do cover versions of.

I'm not exactly a liberal myself, but it is true that most great musicians are liberals, and of course Bush is not gonna like a lot of them, which should answer TT's question .

I mean, the only great musicians I can think of that may have been Republican supporters are James Brown, Ray Charles, Sammy Davis Jr and Johnny Ramone...all have passed away. Even former supporters such as Mike Love and Neil Young ended up turning against them. There's still Charlie Daniels and Ted Nugent, but that's about it. I'd hate being a conservative, being such a big music fan .

Joan Baez was and is one of the best vocalists in music. And I also have to agree with Snouter that she does have great messages in her songs, as do RATM, although I wouldn't say they are as musically talented as her.

John Mellencamp is one of the best live performers, and I saw him live at the time when I had an average opinion on him, and John Fogerty (one of my top 10 favorite artists of all the time) was openning the show. I thought I would be bored with JCM especially because Fogerty was AMAZING, but to my surprise, Mellencamp almost stole the show!!

Alice Cooper, LL Cool J, Gene Simmons, Hootie and the Blowfish (I actually know the band from weekends at the WindJammer on Isle of Palms SC), Sammy Hagar and the Van Halen brothers.

Some conservative opinions, maybe, but hardly a political activist or somebody to represent the republican party anyways . He actually lives like 30 minutes away from me, friends tell me he's really cool.

A conservative republican? Source please, lol. And HARDLY a "great musician"...good rapper, but not even among the best by any means.

Are they conservative republicans? Really? Also, I would rather rank them as "good", rather than "great".

If Eddie is a conservative republican, then he sure as hell doesn't live up to his values . I really doubt he's political anyways.

Sammy Hagar is a VERY moderate conservative, who is hardly political anyways. Also, I wouldn't call him a "great musician", good maybe.

Only SOME issues!! Yes, he is against radical islamists, a stronger supporter of America and Israel and he usually is against the use of drugs. But that hardly makes one a conservative republican.

I bet the religious right guys would love somebody like Gene Simmons (especially with the # of women he had sex with) to represent them .

Great is in the eye of the beholder.......I think rap music sucks...some think its the birds eye.......

LL Cool J was part of the MTV "get out the vote", I remember him saying that he was the only conservative in the bunch.....

Gene Simmons voted for Bush...twice......I watched his stupid show a couple times.......

Eddie and Alex have and did in the past vote for republicans....if you are old enough to remember....Eddie was a big Reagan fan......even though I doubt Reagan knew who he was.......

Alice Cooper's story is one of the strangest in rock ‘n' roll. Here you have a man who at one point was probably the most parentally despised and feared figure in rock music (and consequently one of the most popular), a degenerate performer whose depraved stageshow trademarks - including ghoulish eye makeup; a bloody guillotine; a live boa constrictor wrapped around his body with which he'd touch tongues; chopped and diced baby dolls; etc. - were shocking and outrageous in the early 1970s, becoming a blueprint for theatrically-inclined pioneers and imitators for years to come, from KISS to Alien Sex Fiend, from The Tubes to Rob Zombie, from Marilyn Manson to Slipknot to Bob Dylan on his Rolling Thunder tour (who shortly thereafter told Rolling Stone he thought Alice Cooper was "an overlooked songwriter"). Today, Vincent Furnier, as his mom ‘n' pop named him, couldn't be more opposite: a Christian, Republican family man who owns a sports-themed restaurant, Alice Cooper'stown, in Phoenix, where he grew up and is now often spotted at Arizona Diamondbacks games chumming it up with Senator John McCain.

I suppose I could click the link just to confirm, but if memory serves me correctly, Alice was a preacher's son, no?
