Why, why, WHY can't I work from home?!?!
I mean, really. It's not like I meet with clients. Its not like I don't do my work when I do work from home. My son turns one this Sunday, and I feel like I have missed his whole first year!!! I work in the IT department of a law firm doing database management. I can do almost my entire job from home. Yes, there are times I would need to come in, but they would be few and far between. This is just MIND-BOGGLING!! I don't need to be here! I don't ever even see my boss, and his office is on the other side of the building from mine. PATHETIC! I just want to be home with my baby, before he isn't a baby anymore.
VENT, VENT, VENT!!! (Okay, feel better--thanks for listening!) |

The firm won't allow it. They claim there were "individuals" who abused the work-from-home policy in the past, so they took it away. I can only work from home when my son is sick (although I have to admit to a couple of "sick" days when he wasn't so "sick"). I have mostly accepted this stupid policy, it's just days like today when the weather is beautiful that I wish I could be at home, sitting in the back yard watching my son play and working wirelessly on my laptop. That would be heaven!

good reason not to have kids IMO. It's one of the main reasons we don't have any (besides the fact I don't like them). I don't think kids should be raised in day care centers. They should be raised at home with at least one family member being there

I saw a report the other day about how many companies are adopting a new policy where...get this...employees only have to come in when they want to. Yeah, they set their own hours, they can come and go as they please, work from home if they want, as long as they get their work done. The companies claim that productivity is skyrocketing with this new philosophy.

Exactly. Who cares? You get to actually have a life instead of your life being work.

I think that as more people who are accustomed to the easy technology that exists in the home move into management, this will become more common. From an overhead and supervision standpoint, it definitely reduces costs. Individual workers will have to be more disciplined, but it won't take long to weed out the producers from those who can't pull it off without a cubicle. I'm sure that there would be associated effects on a social aspect by further isolating people in their respective dens, home offices, or basements, but am definitely interested in seeing where it goes.

I have quite a bit of experience with telecommuting, not all of it good. I lived in Chicago from '99-'00 and when I wanted to move home to NH, I was allowed to set up a home office. While in this position, I did next to no work. I actually felt guilty for taking their money. After some time, a position opened where I could get out Sales (which I desparately wanted) and to actually teach people how to use tools that make it possible TO telecommute, Web Conferencing. Our company was basically a reseller of all things telecommunications. I was a WebEx and a Microsoft certified trainer. I was literally a poster child for effective telecommuting, so it was easy to help sell the clients on the idea. The company gets purchased, I get laid off. Karma rearing it's ugly head.
I remain unemployed for the better part of a year and when I do find work, it is over an hours drive each way. Since I am using a similar technology, I propose the idea of a split week, some in the office, some at home. I was told that after we got through the inital part of the launch, I would work from home and then they just decided that wasn't what they wanted. I commuted through ridiculous snow storms, and spent insane amounts of $$ on gas - as this was during Katrina times. then I got fired from there. And it sucked, but now I am out of the corp. rat race and wear jeans to work and make next to no $$. And I work nights, which I hate. But I'm STILL happier than I was at either of those places. ![]() |
