'We want this baby polar bear dead' say animal rights lobby

'We want this baby polar bear dead' say animal rights lobby

Tiny, fluffy and adorable, Knut the baby polar bear became an animal superstar after he was abandoned by his mother.

He rapidly became the symbol of Berlin Zoo, whose staff bottle-fed him and handed out cuddles in between

At three months old, however, the playful 19lb bundle of fur is at the centre of an impassioned debate over whether he should live or die.

Animal rights activists argue that he should be given a lethal injection rather than brought up suffering the humiliation of being treated as a domestic pet.

"The zoo must kill the bear," said spokesman Frank Albrecht. "Feeding by hand is not species-appropriate but a gross violation of animal protection laws."

When Knut was born in December, his mother ignored him and his brother, who died. Zoo officials intervened, choosing to raise the cub themselves.

And apparently killing the Bear would NOT be a gross violation of animal protections laws?

You do have to understand that this just made my head explode.

I'm at a loss. If they don't want it, I'll take it. It is adorable. If it were in the wild and feeding it would ruin its chances of survival, I could see the objection. But none of that is true, and saving a life is a worthy cause. I strongly suspect some eugenics lunatics have infiltrated the animal rights group involved.

How can they kill something too cute. It's cuteness would make them cry into submission. It's not logical in my book.

They won't think it's so cute when it grows up and eats a kid. That is the most fearsome predator on earth, period. Shoot the stupid thing.

^Christ on a bicycle! I finally get my head back on and all the brain parts stuffed back into my skull and now 86 makes it explode again. I hate when that happens. *pouts*

edit to add: (and this is a complete aside), the fur of a polar bear isn't white. It's translucent. The skin under the fur is white, which gives them their color, but the individual hairs are colorless. This useless piece of information has been brought to you by "Lisa's Fun Facts" tm.

Yeah, the hair is like a fiber optic in way. I know all about bears because my buddy at work is a furry, and goes to conventions in a bear costume where he screws other people in other bear costumes in giant bear orgy. Bear this, bear that, bear screen saver, bear .wav files, on and on and on. Shoot it, stuff, cuddle it.

The skin of the polar bear is black, something that is not easy to see. Its white fur actually allows light to reach this skin and the dark skin absorbs the heat from the sun, another adaptation of the polar bear to living in the extreme cold of the Arctic.

Wow! And I thought I was strange because I still sleep with a Teddy Bear. (actually, it's not a Teddy Bear, it's a Smokey Bear.....but he does leave the ranger hat off at night, )

Despite what our eyes tell us, a polar bear's fur is not white. Each hair shaft is pigment-free and transparent with a hollow core.
Then again, maybe I'm not. http://www.kokomo.k12.in.us/Boulevar...r_bear_fur.htm

She is right about the bear skin being black.
