It's hardly an unheard-of phenomenon on forums such as these.

I don't see that newcomers are made particularly unwelcome on this site. If anything, it is the lack of respect towards long term members who helped to drive traffic via their contributions to fun and interesting threads that is the Main Problem.

Look, despite what anyone thinks, we don't ban anyone because we don't like them, because we disagree with them potically or socially, or anything along those lines. People get banned because they don't follow the rules, even after being asked many times to please stop their behavior.

The rules are not hard to follow, the banned have made a choice not to follow them, and thus have been removed from the board. I agree that there have been some great members banned, but it was THEIR CHOICE. It's quite simple to remain a fine and upstanding member of the board.

This kind of behavior is exactly what I'm talking about:

Not all of the long term members could be described that way. Some have driven members and traffic away. Some have notions of "fun and interesting" that seem pretty abusive to others. Why is someone who has just barely avoided being banned for two years more deserving of respect than someone who might only have been here a week or two but has already shown themselves capable of meaningful contribution? The rules say nothing about seniority. There's nothing about a "pledge period" before one becomes a full member of the community.

On a forum like this, just as in most workplaces I've been in, the true leaders, the people genuinely deserving of respect, are those who allow the community to develop. That means making sure that when Joe Newcomer shows up he isn't set upon by a dozen members who reflexively attack anyone who disagrees with another member of the pack. It means not belittling people for bringing up issues or arguments that they had no way of knowing had been seen here before. It means letting people get on their feet and find their voice before judging them. As a community we suck at that, and I don't exempt myself from that criticism either. With all of the rivalries between liberals and conservatives, "lighten up" vs. "get serious" folks, lovers and haters of gay avatars and sigs, friends and foes of Samson or Mandrake or Alex, or the endless rivalry between the prom-queen wannabes, this place sometimes seems a bit like a prison yard where all the turf is claimed and newcomers had better find a gang to join if they want to survive. Some people just can't be bothered dealing with behavioral patterns they thought they'd left behind in junior high, and they go somewhere else. Thus the inevitable departures are not balanced by new blood, and the site stagnates.

Old people leave, and new ones arrive. Get used to it. Try to make it a positive thing, instead of trying to bring back the "good old days" which might not have seemed so good to those who were there at the time but got sick of it. If DA gets boring it will not be because of those who did leave but because of those who didn't.

I'll go with "yes" on two reasons:

1.) I'm personally losing the stomach to debate. I feel rusty and I'm not very good at doing it anymore. And I've become more mellow/happy go lucky in real life. I just don't like arguing anymore.
2.) It feels like many of the people who were here in the hey-day are less active or outright gone. I like familiarity.

That being said, I still lurk. Forums are addictive to me.

It's pretty much a reflection of the real world ... perhaps if we hazed nOObs it would add a fun-loving frat-party feel here

    Surely a diversionary tactic.

    206 confirmed kills

If by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."
