    oil filters?

while i was organizing my Dodge Ram van shelf i discovered i had 2 new Purolator oil filters for my '96 Ram van. 2 weeks ago i bought 2 Napa Gold filters (made by Wix) for it's next two oil changes (already used one).

just wondering if i should pitch the Purolator filters or actually use 'em.

I use only K&N's for the past few years. I put them on pretty tight (probably a turn and a half after contact) and need the nut that is built on them to loosen them when time to change the oil.

dunno if you're using the K&N filters for good filtration, or good flow, but the Moble 1 filters filter down to 10 microns, the K&N only to 20.

I was going for maximum filtration. I am basically changing the Castrol Syntec 5-30 every 2500 miles. I'll check those Mobil 1's out. I have always hesitated from using Mobil 1 branded stuff since it increased the oil leak on the rear seal of the old 5.0 back when I tried some Mobil 1 synthetic oil on it.

I used Castrol GTX conventional oil until I put 10K miles on the engine to make sure all the rings and everything were broken in. I don't know if that is really necessary, I thought that was the concensus though on the issue.

Purolators are good, As are wix.. Metal Internal valves and good synthetic filter media make them very reliable. Just avoid frams.. they are crap. I personally use Bosch's or K&n's on the MG and Prelude, On the Mustang i almost always use Motocraft's.

Here is a good study on oil filters and their designs.

Like everyone else said, they're not bad .... the pure-ones are actually pretty good. Having said that, I do only use Motorcraft on the Ford, and AC-Delco (Golds when I can find them) on the GM's.... not sure what I'll use on the bike, probably the Suzuki filter from the dealer or a pure one if I can find one.

I always use Fram filters, but most importantrly, I use Mobil1 synthetic oil. There's nothing better. My truck just rolled over 200,000 and still runs great, has almost all of it's original compression, and doesn't burn a drop of oil.

    oil filters

if you have a ford product you should use wix filters. But if your going for the best you can get yo can buy a screen that goes between your oil filter and where you screw it in at and it filters out every single bit of dirt. Also when you do your oil change use an oil and then use Lucas oil stabilizer that you can buy at your local parts store and another good idea before you change your oil is to put an additive called B-12 Chemtool in your oil you only have to put half of a can in your oil andthen start your engine and let it idle for 3-4 minutes. drain your oil and your crank, valves, lifters, and everything else is as clean as the day it rolled off the assemblie line. but do not put the b-12 in after you change your oil because its not something you keep in your engine for a long time.

fram here too.. been using them for YEARS. NEVER had a problem. All that "fram is crap" is just that, crap. Post all the tests/stories you want, I've never had problems

On the Mustang, it's Motorcraft filter and oil

Scratch that .... AC-Delco switched up the filter for my truck, its not 1/2 the size ... I don't like that. I got a pure-one for it (its "normal" sized), and my Stang is sporting a pure-one also ... nothing but Mobil 1 goes in them.

5w30 in the truck, 10w40 in the stang ... I found it's right around $20 for the 5qt jug at wallmart (maybe a little more then $20), that's where I get it for the change ... then I go to costco for the extra qt in the truck and spares for the stang (she'll go through a qt every 2k or so) ... so, every third or fith oil change I run to costco for a case of 1qt'ers ... I leave it in there 5k miles in the stang ... 3k / once per year (what ever is first) in the truck.

I'm with Kraw- I never had trouble with Fram oil filters or air filters. That's all my dad's ever used too.

I use Lucas in the oil too, as well as the Lucas fuel additive from time to time.

For oil I've always used Castrol. Notmally 10w30 Synthetic Blend or 10w30 pure Synthetic.

Had a recent issue with oil beign used up about a quart a month, but since adding some Marvel oil system treatment for rejuvenating gaskets and seals it's behaved itself fine.

Said it was good for either on the bottle.

It's not Marvel's Mystery Oil. It's a treatment made by Marvel, specifically for rejuvenation old seals and such.

So, with Liquid Wrench I'd drain my oil, add half a quart of new oil and one bottle of Liquid Wrench, run for 3-4 minutes, drain the lot of that, then change the filter and add the new oil?

you would add one pint of Liquid Wrench 150 miles before your next oil change. then drain, change filter, and fill with new oil. disolves sludge, gum, etc. that can build up in an engine.
