You know how the time flies
Only yesterday was the time of our lives
    We were born and raised
    In a summer haze
Bound by the surprise of our glory days

Ummm, yeah, I've been actually listening to them for 4 years, they did have a few very good originals and they could cover songs by Marvin Gaye and Bo Diddley very well. They were a good and very underrated band.

However, they still weren't on the level of Small Faces or even Clapton's Yardbirds.

The Birds and The Byrds were actually better than the Yardbirds.
I'm sorry (and I LOVE The Byrds and like The Birds), but that's just not true. The Byrds did a completely differen thing, Dylan-incluenced folk rock (later some great country-rock and some psychodelic too), while Yardbirds were Blues, later psychodelic, and The Birds were R&B-Rock band.

The Birds did NOT play ANYWHERE as good as The Yardbirds though. Ron Wood is a great guitarist (especially on slide), and he later turned out to be PERFECT for The Rolling Stones, but lets be fair, even at his best he can't hold a candle to Clapton, Beck or Page (even considering only their work with The Yardbirds), nor does Roger McGuinn, despite being one of the best and more influential 12-string player of all the time.

The rest of the Yardbirds were never on the level of their lead guitarists, but still great enough to be better musicians than both Birds and most of The Byrds, and Keith Relf (while no Eric Burdon or Mick Jagger by any means) was an underrated singer.

    John Mellencamp: Jack And Diane

Jack And Diane - John Mellencamp
Little *****, about Jack and Diane
2 American kids growin up in the heartland.
Jacky goin' be a football star
    Diane's debutante--backseat of Jacky's car

Suckin' on chili dog outside the tastey freeze.
Diane sittin' on Jacky's lap, got his hands between her knees
Jacky say, "Hey Diane, let's run off hind' shady tree"
Dribble off those Bobby Brooks, let me do what I please.

Jacky says, oh yeah life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin is gone
Say uh, oh yeah life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin is gone. They walk on.

Jacky sits back, collects his thoughts for the moment
Scratches his head and does his best James Dean.
Well you know diane, we oughtta run of the city.
Diane says "Baby, you ain't missin' nothing"
    Jacky say uh,

    Oh yeah life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin is gone
Oh yeah they say life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin is gone
    He walks on.

Gonna let it rock, let it roll
Let the bible belt, come and save my soul
Hold on to 16 as long as you can
Changes come around real soon, make us women and men.

Little *****, about Jack and Diane
Two American kids doin' best they can
    Mirrors on the ceiling,
    The pink champagne on ice
And she said ’we are all just prisoners here, of our own device’
    And in the master’s chambers,
    They gathered for the feast
The stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can’t kill the beast
