'Cuddly' koala attacks woman

A KOALA has attacked an Adelaide woman at her home and inflicted injuries - including ripping an ear - requiring surgery.

The koala attacked Danielle Williams in the yard of her home at Aberfoyle Park in Adelaide's southern suburbs about 11pm on Thursday.

She was taken to Flinders Medical Centre and will need an operation to repair an ear.

Mrs Williams' husband Glenn said the attack was unprovoked. "Danielle was in our back yard and [the koala] just came down out of a tree and went for her," Mr Williams said.

"It cut her ear in two. It was like someone had cut it with a surgical knife.

"Everyone pictures koalas as being cute and cuddly, but not all of them are - especially those that are in the wild.".

An RSPCA spokeswoman said unless the koala was injured, their advice was to stay away from the animal.

Koalas have a reputation for being docile creatures, as they sleep up to 18 hours a day. But they have sharp claws - used primarily for climbing - which can be used as a weapon in defence.

While attacks on humans are rare, fights between koalas can be extremely violent with opponents vigorously scratching and biting each other.

Thats like chimpanzees. I've always heard that adult chimps are very aggressive and extremely strong and will jack up humans whenever possible. Thats supposedly why only baby chimps are used on television.

Attacks by animals are never unprovoked - we just do notknow what she did to provoke it.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the food they eat has a narcotic effect on them - that's why they sleep so much and why they occasionally just fall right out of the tree they're in.

But we all know what happens with too much narcotics - maybe he was going through withdrawal.
