    Japanese RPGs = Yuck.

    Best RPGs

    Ultima IV, V, and VII

    Planescape: Torment

And I will nod enthusiastically in the direction of Fallout.

And here's to hoping that Knights of the New Republic will make the list.

Ah, so many good ones to choose from!

Candidates include: Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Suikoden I & 2, Final Fantasy Tactics...

Hmm... I still have to say Chrono Trigger, but only barely.

As for Suikoden 3... I don't want to say much, if you guys are still playing it. But I did not like it. PM me if you want more info

New RPG coming out this month. It is based on an old D&D campaign mod, Temple of Elemental Evil. Looks good

The Baldurs Gate series. Black Isle makes perfect RPGs that stay true to the old D&D. Baldurs Gate I was full of character development and action based storyline that always had you busy and thinking about what else you had to do (I used to hear the BG theme music in my sleep I played it so much) Overall it was an upbeat game.

Baldurs Gate II was much more morbid and had a lot of storyline that based itself in the gutter population of the Forgotten Realms city of Baldurs Gate. The deaths and betrayel and overall atmosphere of this game is untouched by anything else out there.

I'd like to try the Icewind Dale series.

look its a 4 way tie between Morrowind, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Diablo 2 and Arcanum: Of Steamworks And Magick Obscura. Of course the best of all rpg's is the grandaddy of them all, pen and paper D&D baby.

    hey
we're campaigning D&D right now, and our motto is : "no background, screw roleplay, long lives rules and statisitcs !!!" ... trust me or not, it's great fun: we almost don't need a GM , and we get the best of him on most contentious anyway ...

Xcept if your sole notions of P&P rpg are charater optimization and Door/monsters/treasure+xp

Even though it's been said countless times, I'm gonna go with FFVII....

Loved the Story line, FMV's and summons....

    Second most is Kingdom Hearts....

I don't care what anyone says, i liked Ehrgeiz. It may not have been the best, or anything close to that, but for a dungeon crawler, it was indeed unique and refreshing.

As for actual world-exploring RPGs, nothing beats The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Not only is that sucker huge, with dozen of powerful hidden items, hundreds of caves, mines, tombs, and ruins, dozens of remote towns, several modes of transportation, a world that is preset to the inch in its miles of explorable land, with customizable spells and items, but is also has a long main quest and LITERALLY HUNDREDS of sidequests. This game has by far had the most sweat put into.

I would like to state, too, that this thread has inspired me to make a page devoted to games you should never play. Check it out please.

I don't remember Ehrgeiz how old is that one?

Its a PS 1 game. It was a fighting game that came a little after FF7 and included many characters (Cloud, Tifa, Yuffie, Vincent, Zak, Sephiroth) as a playable people. It is a very hard find nowadays, though, because after they translated it, they only made a few copies. Its a crappy fighting game, but the dungeon crawl mode is good.
