Maj. Gen Eshel says that Syria's arming 'will produce confidence, aggressive behavior'; IDF chief stresses 'military faces real scenario of confrontation on multiple fronts'
Yoav Zitun Published: 05.22.13, 17:24 / Israel News

Air Force Commander Major General Amir Eshel said Wednesday that S-300 advanced missile defense system will soon land in the hands of the Syrian army.

Speaking at a convention in Herzliya, Eshel added "there is a clear understanding that such capabilities will produce confidence and aggressive behavior."

"Aerial superiority is a condition to win and win quickly, and is of great strategic importance. The other side understands that well, which is why Assad, with his low budget, has invested billions into purchasing antiaircraft missiles."

"It's not just our problem. The challenge that is developing in the north did not start yesterday and there isnt a challenge that has no solution," the air force chief noted, adding that Syria could collapse soon and different forces could get hold of Assad's armory.

"This does not mean we will act, but it means we must be ready with our planes and missile defense systems. No one is going to tell us 'take two weeks to prepare for the war.' We will have to be ready for confrontations in Gaza and Lebanon, including long-range ones. Failure to prepare for this would mean a failure to learn the lessons of the Yom Kippur War."

Eshel asserted that "Today, a war can develop in many ways, including single incidents that will force us to activate the entire air force within hours. In 2013, a war can be won, but there arent any triumphant knockouts anymore."

He warned against an "overreliance on technology. Those who think we'll just press 'Enter' and win the war are wrong. There won't be a recipe for the next war. We'll have to learn to deal with failures and surprises."

Also Wednesday, IDF Chief of Staff Brig. Gen. Benny Gantz said: "In light of the region's instability, the military faces a real scenario of a confrontation on multiple fronts, and is in a new resource reality which could change it completely."

Gantz added: "We are committed to act positively, efficiently and with maximum coordination to ensure victory in any future campaign and quickly win any confrontation."

On Tuesday, Gantz said: "If Assad destabilizes the Golan Heights, he will pay a heavy price."

Gantz vehemently denied that the IDF jeep hit Tuesday had in fact entered into the Syrian side of the Golan as Syria had claimed adding that "the patrol was most definitely traveling along the Syrian border fence, but it did not infiltrate into Syrian territory; that is nonsense." "The patrol was fired at once, then a second time and a third time, all of which undoubtedly from the Syrian post."

Israel live in delusional "fear" of war from ANYONE that can defend themselves. Notice anyone with an Army "is seeking nukes." The Palestinians in their eyes are the only ones that aren't while Syria, HazBollah & Iran are all seeking Nuclear Arms and require GLOBAL resistance against them.

Israel is scared of Syria. As of now they're trying to get President Obama to enforce a Blockade to prevent delivery of an S-300 systems. But israel said that Syria has atleast 1 & the training to go with it.

A Syrian military source told the London-based Arab daily Al-Quds Al-Arabi that Syria has received 200 launchers of the advanced S-300 anti-aircraft missile system from Russia. The delivery supposedly took place after the outbreak of the Syrian conflict and the Syrian experts have finished their training and can operate the system independently without the need to be managed by Russian experts.

This report contradicts other sources that state that Russia has not yet delivered the advanced anti-aircraft system to Syria. Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu visited Russia on Tuesday and was expected to try to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin from carrying out the deal.

Netanyahu and Putin were meeting in the Russian city of Sochi.

Because they are the forces tasked with the responsibility of defending the country known as Israel. Pretty self-explanatory if you ask me.

Russia broke UN embargo to arm Serbs

The Guardian, Monday 2 August 1999 20.35 EDT Russia supplied surface to air missile equipment to Serbia before the start of the Nato bombing campaign when a United Nations arms embargo was in force, defence experts claimed today.
Between six and 10 S-300PM missile systems were transported into Serbia without Nato's knowledge, according to a report in Jane's Defence Weekly.

But the missiles were not used to shoot down allied planes because they arrived incomplete, while Nato bombing further disturbed deliveries, the report said.

The claims follow the revelation that General Sir Michael Jackson, commander of the K-For peacekeeping force, refused an order by Nato's supreme commander, General Wesley Clarke, to send in forces to confront Russian paratroopers who had raced to Pristina airport ahead of Nato-led forces on June 12. There has been speculation in military circles that one of the reasons the Russians were determined to beat Nato to Pristina airfield was to protect the hidden weapons systems stored there in bunkers.

But Russia has categorically denied supplying weapons to the Serb regime in contravention of the UN embargo. A Russian embassy official in London told the defence weekly: "The Russian government denies any violation of international norms, especially in respect of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Allegations of arms smuggling are without foundation."

The Russian arms export agency, Rosvoorouzhenie, also denied the claims.

The report quotes a high-ranking Serbian officer as saying the first shipment of between six and 10 incomplete S-300PM systems entered Serbia by land, hidden in railway wagons carrying scrap iron, in early 1999.

Sources said an unspecified quantity of the missile systems was smuggled into the country in a Russian humanitarian convoy, hidden in what appeared to be fuel tankers.

Serbian engineers had already been working on plans to make the missile systems at least partly operational with a live test scheduled for May 30. But Nato aircraft detected radar emissions from the launch site and destroyed the test systems with an F-16 missile.

The report said the remaining systems were withdrawn to underground tunnels in Rakovica, south of Belgrade.

A journal spokesman, Paul Beaver, said: "The equipment was in place but we think it was destroyed before the end of May."

A ministry of defence spokesman said: "We cannot substantiate the story."

Kind of like the US Department of Defense? Overt and covert imperial entities should be honest and refer to these government agencies as War Departments like the USA did in the old days!

    Typical liberal nonsense.

Iran is a threat... especially if the get nukes. Syria is using chemical weapons and so Assad and his army of mass-murderers need to be destroyed.

How come some of liberals are so blind?

Thumbs up Syria has recieved 1st S-300 Triumph shipment!

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says Damascus is already in possession of the first batch of S-300 missile defense systems from Russia.

During an interview with Lebanons Al-Manar TV, President Assad also said that the second shipment of the Russian systems will be delivered to Syria soon.

He added that Syria would respond to any Israeli aggression against the country.

The complete interview is expected to be aired later on Thursday.

Earlier on May 28, Moscow had said it would go ahead with the delivery of S-300 systems to Damascus, following which the Israeli regime hinted it would take action to prevent the delivery of the systems to Damascus.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem later reiterated that Damascus would give an immediate response to any act of aggression by Israel.

Syria will not let any Israeli aggression go unanswered without retaliation. The retaliation will be the same size as the aggression, and the same type of weapons will be used, the Syrian foreign minister stated.

In a separate development, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on May 29 that Moscow may reconsider its commitments to restrictions on the delivery of arms to the Syrian government, following a recent decision by the European Union to end an arms embargo on the militants in Syria.

Russia says that the shipment of the S-300 missile defense system is aimed at deterring foreign intervention in Syria.

Syria has been gripped by turmoil since March 2011 and the foreign-sponsored militancy has taken its toll on the lives of many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel.
