Why not just gather the information and feed it into one good computer.
Supercomputers are ridiculously expensive. Getting several million people to contribute a few processor cycles is not. Also, if you get enough people doing it, you can end up with rather more computing power than the average supercomputer.

In the next 6 hours or so I will cross the line to 10,000 units completed!!!! (over 5000 done since 1/12/2004)

Æsir (if you ever read this...) the screen saver is just a graphic to amuse yourself with as the actual program does the data crunching. A packed of unprocessed data is downloaded toyour machine by the program. It then processes the data, taking hours or days as a background program. When done, the results are sent in andyoru account is credited with the units done and any spectacular discoveries from units you processed will get you part of the credit for the discovery.

    Nice milestone Frog.

Like he said, having a 4 million+ user base is slightly more computing power than quite a few supercomputers, and not to mention all it costs them is power, scripting, and maintenance even though berkeley does have corporate sponsorship for this program. Unfortunately the majority of Seti@home users haven't completed a single WU, prob'ly because they get tired of the screen saver before it completes just one.

However there is the cli version which runs considerably faster and in the background. There are a few tools to help with the invisibility of the project for those who borg corporate workstations(only after authorized though) such as setidriver and various peoples' service install scripts.

If your in it for the competition go with cli version 3.03 which you can google for under "seti archives" as it's been clocked about 10% faster than version 3.08 which only fixes a very obscure security flaw in the scripting from version 3.03.

Aside from that, even though it's been answered, Seti@home is a distributed computing project which collects information from the arecebo(sp???) radio telescope to the main server at berkeley which then distributes smaller, easier packaged tests to everyone who is still actively involved in the project(run-on sentence anyone?) After you receive your result, your computer then processes the WU's until completed then resubmitted back to the servers at berkeley. Also, all workunits(WU) are processed multiple times to ensure accuracy.

Basically the telescope receives transmissions from distant stars and checks them for the possibility of intelligent life. It does this by scanning the frequencies hydrogen and oxygen(which are rather low frequencies IIRC) and combining the data to see the likelyhood of another distant civilization.

If I got anything wrong please correct me, you can verify by going to the SETI homepage and browsing there which is easily located via a google search for seti, first link that pops up.

BTW, I'm working on 5k results in the last two years.

But if you are interested in other projects there are f@h, GIMPS, SOB, D2OL, MD5CRK which are various projects ranging from medical research, searching for prime numbers and figuring out how much computing power is needed to break a certain security key. If you need links send me an e-mail @ hopesmAT3mawdmDOTusmcDOTmil and I'll be happy to point you in the right direction.

    edit:
Also Berkeley is getting ready to launch phase II of their project called BOINC.

Sorry about the lack of links, I'm on a slow connection.

    Great Googley-Moogley!

I thought that I was running a good amount of packets per day....

Real quick, if anyone is still crunching, berkeley has launched it's Seti@BOINC stage to the public now. New GUI, from what I hear it's pretty optimised and provides several new options, including tracking progress from individual computers. Anyway, just a heads up.

I've been running S@H for quite some time now and like the idea of participating very much. However I've only completed 183 units so far, because it interferes with eDonkey, so I only run it when I'm not DLing anything :>

Whocares, I agree in full. the SETI@Home program is identified as spyware by many spyware neutralization software titles. Gee, wonder why.

And yes, it is a waste of time. Specifically CPU time. I've got much better things to push my CPU with than some false attempt at interpreting space noise.
Just on the border of your waking mind, there lies another time, where darkness and light are one, and as you tread the halls of sanity, you feel so glad to be unable to go beyond.

I have a message, from another time...

Switched to this just last week. Seems to be okay so far.

Ive got a great idea and dont install it. Would you still consider it a waste of time when we find other intelligent life out there?
