    Evaporating New Threads

In the morning I select discussanything.com/forums/search.php?do=getnew&contenttype=vBForum_Post from my favorites to see what was posted overnight. This morning I was presented with 46 unread posts.

I picked one to open, Word Association, added to it and clicked on New Posts to go back to the list. Now there were only ten in the list. Why? There should be 45 left. Where'd the other 35 unread posts go, and why?

This happens every day so I thought I'd mention it. There could be content in those posts that I asked for, and now I'll never see it if the most recent poster is the last poster in the thread.

Every time you hit "New Posts" it refreshes the list and shows you the new posts since you last checked. When you hit New Posts again, it assume you've read them all, and give you what's new. Your best bet is to hit New Posts, then open your threads in a new window. After you have picked through what intrigues you, hit New Posts again to see if anything new has popped up. That's what I do.

That's a way around the problem, but why is there a problem to begin with? Why did those 35 unread threads disappear during the few seconds I was responding to the Word Association thread?

My guess is that the first time you click new posts you get all the threads that have new posts since your last visit. The second time you click new you get only the threads that have been updated within the last hour or some set amount of time. Instead of clicking new posts, you could just use the back arrow to get back to the full list.

OK, I think I see where the system is haywire. When I go to New Posts in the morning, I see 12 hrs' worth of unread posts, as it should be.

If I read one without responding and click on New Posts again, it takes me back to the same list, except that the thread I just opened is no longer in bold font. This is expected.

If I read one and post a quick response, then click on New Posts, it also takes me back to the original list with that thread title no longer in bold font, as expected.

But if I pick one and "reply with quote", when I click on new posts, almost all the posts that had been in the list earlier have evaporated, before I've had a chance to read them.

    Does that help?

I was very confused about this , also. The word game.....always disappears. I understand about the new window, but thats a lot to do to see the posts. It may be, we are on a smaller server...or its just the way it is. Sometimes I log off, come back 5 mins later and fom 20 new posts , now I have 3....and mine are gone and buried somewhere.

I still don't quite understand....but just search the post out and bring it back with a comment.

We can get around this problem with using the back arrow to return to the list each time until we've looked at them all, but that's annoying because we've lost our place in the list each time. The thread we just checked out isn't in lighter font to identify where we were in the list before we left it and it's necessary to again wade through a catalog of inane thread titles looking for one of interest.

In this, I totally agree, I get up early, and while coffee perks....I check whats up, and sometimes everything disapears, with " there are no new posts. I go to my profile pg. and hope I commented on the thread I'm looking for. That way a new post will bring the thread back, but that , too is a hassle

Oh well, whats to be done

nada.......I'll just keep doing it the way I do.
