please note:- sports thread should go in sports forum.

Also it can be tough for small countries like Ireland and Israel to win medals as they have a lot smaller field of athletes to pick.

I enjoy watching Cuba (or any other small country, especially those on the US government's hate list) win medals. The reason is: A medal is worth so very much more to an athlete from a poor country than it is to an American (or Chink, etc.). The victory actually has some meaning other than creating opportunities to make gazillions of $ appearing in junk food commercials.

I was looking forward to seeing the great Dayron Robles beat China's Liu Xiang in the 110 meters final, but Liu is now out of the competition due to injury. Still I will enjoy Robles winning gold.

One thing that puzzles me is the apparent decline of Cuba's once great boxing and volleyball teams. Is this decline due to the risk of defection? (I seem to recall some Cubans disappearing at the Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro a few years ago.)

I think Cuba has won about as many total medals as any country that has never hosted the Olympic games.

per wikipedia, 11.2 million people for Cuba
per wikipedia, 7.8 million people for Israel

but it isn't purely about numbers of people, but just with 43% more people, there is the greater chance of their being an olympic champion in the field. for example, argentina have 1 bronze medal and they have 41 million people.
in terms of sporting prowess in my favourite sport, there is infinitely more israel cyclists on top level teams than there is cuban cyclists.

I also don't think gloating about failure to win medals for one country is in the olympic spirit. personally speaking, i'm happy with the british successes in the olympic and if british success leads to more cycling on my tv screens, well that's an added plus.

bring back the arts & culture section for the olympics, israel would surely win something there with fine literary figure like david grossman and tv drama writer like gideon raff.

Iff? per ratio wise the most medals won by any country are the two smallest where one country won one medal per 300,000 people and the other one one medal per 100,000............the state of Israel already stated that there was going to be an investigation and that hey had already spent more than ever in getting ready for the London olympics........one jocker also said that "Maybe we won no medals but we came first in the propaganda media" hahahahahahahaha.

And per # wise, the USA easily wins.

The Chinese did well until track and field. They ain't known for sprinting, altough I would venture to guess that the slowest on the Chinese team could outrun my slow butt. Easily.

When I was 15 I was slower than watching paint dry.

and based on montenegro, cuba should have got 20 medals
and based on israel's number of nobel prize winners, cubans should have 13 nobel prize winners

the thing with population is that there's more people, meaning a higher probability of there being one of the best 3 in the world from the country/town/village/fjord/hamlet. it's no guarantee as to success.

As usual USA and China are the ones who are always getting the gold medals, to what I had learned these two countries have a special training for their athletes in order to keep them is track on getting the gold medals.
