    Remarks on religion

I represent the angry, gun toting meat eating people. ~ Denis Leary

It is always interesting to see what anti-religious yet jewish folks have to say about their own religiously delusional heritage, the concept that Yahweh chose them to perform the horrendous narratives described in the Bible, and Sam seems reasonable in that regard.

Judaism is as intrinsically divisive, as ridiculous in its literalism, and as at odds with the civilizing insights of modernity as any other religion. Jewish settlers, by exercising their "freedom of belief" on contested land, are now one of the principal obstacles to peace in the Middle East.

I've read some of his articles before and liked his approach to issues. I've got Letter to a Christian Nation on a Kindle somewhere, waiting to be read.

While I broadly agree with what he says here, I don't think the New Athiests pay close enough attention to the context in which religious outrages occur. That's important, because religion is a cultural construction, and part of humanity's social formation. For example, religions are more civil in free, democratic societies, and comparatively less civil, more violent and intolerant in unfree and undemocratic countries. That applies to Islam, Christianity and (IMO, but let's not drone on about it) Judaism.
Show us not the aim without the way, for ends and means on earth are so entangled
That changing one, you change the other too; each different path brings other ends in view

I don't know what "new atheists" are, but atheism is an irrelevant topic in regards to Yahweh and the cults or "religious" that are derived from the Yahweh literature. If there is a God, an intelligent Creator, Yahweh ain't It, and Mr. Yahweh DEFINITELY falls in the category of fairy tales JUST like Mr. Zeus other ancient mythology. This is why "atheists" so often seem cowardly and disingenuous.

To illustrate the concept Sam Harris mentioned, I could not help but notice he brought up Islam. Islam is insane, but it is no where near as dangerous as Bible based ideology.

Example, I just watched a few minutes on C-Span of an idiotic Homeland Security Q&A between Joe Lieberman and Congressman Jan Harman. Lieberman might not be religious, but he is a radical, delusional, racist zionist. Harman also might not be religious, but likewise she is a radical, delusional, racist zionist. And they pretend to actually have an open discussion as to what is in the best interest of the USA, the implication being US citizens! Point being these are the individuals making public policy in the USA! Folks who believe in the RACISM of the Old Testament, but maybe not the deity that prescribed the racism, these folks making policy...in the land of the FREE?

So when people like Sam don't come out and say the obvious, one most wonder why...
