I've read some of his articles before and liked his approach to issues. I've got Letter to a Christian Nation on a Kindle somewhere, waiting to be read.
While I broadly agree with what he says here, I don't think the New Athiests pay close enough attention to the context in which religious outrages occur. That's important, because religion is a cultural construction, and part of humanity's social formation. For example, religions are more civil in free, democratic societies, and comparatively less civil, more violent and intolerant in unfree and undemocratic countries. That applies to Islam, Christianity and (IMO, but let's not drone on about it) Judaism.
Show us not the aim without the way, for ends and means on earth are so entangled
That changing one, you change the other too; each different path brings other ends in view
