I know of no basis for believing that humans are monogamous, or that marriage means a relationship between just one man and just one woman. Sexual relationships have only recently been codified and they differ over time, geography and culture.

"Ryan and Jethá's central contention is that human beings evolved in egalitarian groups that shared food, child care, and, often, sexual partners. Weaving together convergent, frequently overlooked evidence from anthropology, archaeology, primatology, anatomy, and psychosexuality, the authors show how far from human nature monogamy really is."

Someone explained it to me once as monogamy is important once children are born for social security purposes.
I had the seven year itch six years and 51 weeks early. I guess I am healthy.
It cracks my up men will tell me they don't have "eyes" looking around. If a guy doesn't admit to at least looking, he's either gay, ill, or lying.
I agree with all, but there is certainy a stability that comes from conforming to the social norm also, whatever that happens to be. In our society it makes people feel more comfortable to know their spose would by shunned for leaving the family unit for another partner for example, making it thus less likely to occur unexpectedly, and making for a more stable family unit. Of course in a society where multiple sposes were the norm that particular situation would not be as present.
Yes. Stability is the goal. I wasn't judging the norm that produced that stability. Different strokes...
YES. Monogamy feels good, and therefore I choose to be monogamous. That, and having a several romantic interests/ sexual partners all at once seems like a lot of work.
Has there ever been any society in which 'polygamous' has meant one lady to many boy-toys? Because, if not, I would venture the opinion that polygamy is, by nature, anti-feminist.
Y'all are too postmodern for me.
That type of polygamy is called "polyandry", Greek for "many men". It's been practiced all over. Wiki the term.
No it's not. Polygamy is significantly more common.
Monogamy is man-made based on a declining traditional moral standard in society.
Biologically we should be procreating as rapid as we possibly can!
People don't watch porn because they only want to be with one person.
No matter how much we fight against the natural urges, spreading the seed is in our blood.
it seems, biologically, women would prefer monogamy. We need a guy who will stick around for a long time to help raise our child. Unfortunately, that doesn't work for most men, because men have the need to "spread their seed" so sticking around for a long time doesn't make sense. I think it would be different if babies learned to fend for themselves sooner, but I don't think humans are built that way. Hell, I still rely on my parents haha
According to me humans are taught to be monogamous. I don't thinks anybody wishes to be so. It is because of the social pressure only that we practice monogamy.
I am monogamous, because I'm in love, and don't want anyone else. A lot of people marry for the wrong reasons, so monogamy is not important to them. They don't think , nor care , if they cause pain, or heartache to they're spouse.

I'm doin the best I ever did.......NOW GO AWAY !!
THE ANGRY LITTLE THREAD KILLER !
No, people are not naturally monogamous. It's actually the opposite. The concept of monogamy is rather new in the scheme of things, and throughout history, it has been extremely rare. Most people cheat at some point in their life because they do whatever feels right for them regardless of how it affects others. It's natural, and it is to be expected.
Yes, monogumous by nature. We can only eat one gummy bear at a time.
I've read an interesting article in latimes here on this subject a while ago and believe this still stands...
