Smoking has medical and financial consequences. What will it take to make you stop?

My stepmother smoked like a chimney. First she had lung cancer but then developed brain cancer. I've been told with lung cancer it''s not uncommon for it to go to the brain. She died six months after diagnoses a horrible death.Do yourself a favor and get the patch or chantix.

I appreciate all the concerns.. I honestly, I believe I can quit if I wanted too.. just choose not too... from what goes on in my life, it's a huge stree reliever.. who knows... maybe I'll regret it., but one thing is for sure, I do NOT plan on smoking my entire life. my mother quit 20 years ago, if she can do it, I can do it.. and I believe it'll happen soon.. but for the time being.. not just yet. /:

Since this is a sneaking out for a cig thread and not a help me quit thread I'll skip that bit, let me know when you finally decide to (cause you can't if you don't) and I'll help you out with some stories that will CURL YOUR TOES

As for smoking during work, I used to work with people that smoked and a boss that smoked, they were allowed smoke breaks while I had to keep working cause I didn't smoke, it was friggin insane and I ended up having to quit because it ended up I was literally doing twice as much since it was condoned.
BTW, don't underestimate the power of the smell, as a nonsmoker whose been exposed I can smell a cigarette wafting from over 100m away, and on someone hours after they've had one so watch that.

FYI, if you think you are sneaking a smoke, don't kid yourself. Non-smokers can smell smoke on someone a mile away and even breath mints don't cover it up.

She was one of the lucky ones, my grandmother also had lung cancer and died within 6 months. The unlucky ones get COPD and/or emphysema and they can't ever get a full breath. They have to carry around oxygen wherever they go and even walking down a hall, gets them out of breath so they have to sit and rest. They basically suffocate because they aren't getting enough oxygen and this can last for years and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars while they go in and out of the hospital, almost dying every time.

You're right. It was hell losing her and hard to watch someone who was always active struck down, but at least she didn't go slowly. I have asthma so I know what suffocation feels like, I wouldn't wish that on anybody.

Just wait until you have the stress of gasping for every breath. It trumps all other stress.

My mom, the smoker, died after many years of being short of breath. In the end it took her an hour to eat a meal. She had to rest after chewing each mouthful due to exhaustion of the "exercise' of eating.

I did the patch once. It worked, had more energy, mouth stayed cleaned, etc but then I started smoking more ganja.
