    Weight Loss Truisms

If maintaining goal weight was a matter of money, then there wouldn't be any overweight rich people (Shatner, Orson Wells, Bill Gates, Ryan O'Neal, Elvis, etc).

95% of weight control is food control.

Exercise has very little to do with weight control. For every five calories you burn exercising, you become six calories hungrier.

Fat people aren't fat because they don't exercise, thin people aren't thin because they do.

People aren't thin because they run. They run because they are thin.

There are three types of people: thin people, overweight people, and temporarily thin people. If you are overweight, then you are overweight. If you are thin, then 1) you are thin or 2) you were overweight, you lost weight but you are almost certain to put it back on.

Overweight people are in one sense destined to be miserable the rest of their lives: They'll either be overweight and miserable or hungry and miserable.

It's easier to lose 40 pounds in six months than it is to keep five pounds off for six months.

The easiest way to lose weight and keep it off for good is to change your genes.

The only diet that has ever worked is the HNM diet: Hungry 'N Miserable.

People aren't really fat, they're just short for their weight.
    Overweight people drink Diet Coke.
    Thin people drink regular Coke.

For losing weight, it really doesn't matter too much on what you eat. (It matters, but not nearly as much as you think.) What you eat really does affect your health (cardiovascular for example, cholesterol, etc), but not your weight.

If you put a genetically thin person in a room for a year with nothing but cakes, ice cream, pizza, white bread, cookies, pasta, fried chicken, donuts...He would come out weighing a little more, but not much.

If you put an genetically overweight person in a room for a year with nothing but cantaloupe, lean chicken, whole grain breads, fresh fruits and vegetables, broiled fish, etc...He would lose a little weight, but not much at all.

Quantity control trumps quality control almost every time. If you are overweight it's not what you eat; it is how much you eat.

Thin people don't eat any healthier than overweight people, it just takes them less calories to become satisfied. Overweight people are overweight because it takes more calories to become satisfied.

    Education does not change this.
Education won't make that quantity of calories less desirable.
Overweight people are typically the most knowledgeable when it comes to food nutrition, calorie content, etc...and they are still overweight.

There is no solution other than discipline and deprivation.

    There is no magic.

Vanity and appearance are the biggest (but not the only) motivators for weight loss and exercise for 80% of people under 50. Before 50, biology trumps longevity: Getting layed (men) or marrying rich (women) is more imporant than not dying young and not feeling good. (Crudely, "Tight butts get rich husbands" and "A man will marry the best looking woman he can afford".)

Specifically for men: 95% of men lift weights primarily for vanity reasons. Evidence: Most men who lift weights spend more time lifting than doing cardio. (Look around at the gym: men are mostly on weights, women on the cardio machines.) While lifting weights is important, cardio takes priority. So if someone has one hour a day of time in their schedule to exercise (a reasonable assumption) and most of that time is lifting, then it can be argued that health takes a back seat to appearance.

Prioritizing weight lifting over cardio is the fitness equivalent of paying down a 6% mortgage while maintaining an 18% credit card balance.

what?!?!? i put all my hope on that!

a colleague of mine did the dr. frank diet, which is a low-carbonhydrates diet. he lost lots of weight quick (and needed too). now, he did say that he ate less, but also that his diminished appetite was a result of maybe 10 days of not being so filled with all the bread and potatoes beer and the 'heavy' foods...

Sure, he might be one of the 5% who keeps it off for more than a year.

I've been lossing weight lately, my Dr said I had to, I'm not stripping it off like you see advertised, but I'm not trying very hard either, I switched diet sodas for regular, and don't drink quite as much of ( I still have a few a day sometimes) I eat wholemeal or wholegrain breads and avoid the white and I make sure I eat something in the morning.... that's the sum total, and I'm halfway to my goal .

I don't see that it'll be any kind of problem, I'm never hungry, never craving..... well if I do I just have it, I don't beat myself up, just make sure I stick to those few particular little rules. It's been two years and it's been slow but it's been constant, I've never once put weight on, though I haven't always lost it month to month either. Which is of course the reason I'm doing it this way and not being too hard on myself, it's pretty easy to maintain what you're doing if what your doing isn't that difficult I do find though that my weight loss has increased as I go along, These days I couldn't bear the thought of devouring a whole cheesecake by myself, I'd simply feel sick, my body no longer wants junk as I've grown accustomed to the flavour of healthier food as I've gone along, and yes I still like coke It's just that I drink half a can now and it tastes rather sickly sweet, so it goes back in the fridge for later. I used to drink two or three in a row without trouble.
For my new years resolution I gave up phenylalanine, which is the sweetening chemical used in most diet drinks, many people claim it increases weight gain and even causes cancer, I used to drink Pepsi Max and Coke Zero, I find since I don't drink phenylalanine anymore my rate of loss has increased... related or not I don't know, but I do know I feel a lot better since I'm not having it, and I'll never have anything with it in again.

Here are some really easy and simple diet and fitness tips:

Write down every calorie you consume in a journal
    Make wise eating decisions
    Overcome your eating addictions
    Change your relationship with food
Don't diet; instead change your lifestyle
    Always measure your food quantities
    Eat in moderation
    Use portion control
Use will power to your advantage
Realize it isn't hunger that is making you hungry
    Choose healthier alternatives
    Don't eat for emotional reasons
Chew your food 10 times before swallowing
Choose carrot sticks instead of french fries
Choose 4 oz of melon instead of a scoop of ice cream
    Eat lettuce instead of bread
If you must eat bread, then choose 22 grain bread
Choose air popped popcorn instead of cookies
Choose grilled or broiled fish instead of a hamburger
Choose grilled or broiled chicken instead of pizza
Don't eat if you are not hungry
Always eat breakfast even if you are not hungry
Never eat in the car, in front of the TV, in front of the computer, while reading, if you have something on your mind, or if you are in a rush
At restaurants, always take half the meal home
    Avoid sugary drinks
    Drink water instead of alcohol
Eat six smaller meals instead of three big meals
Ensure all meals last at least 30 minutes - eat slowly

Motivation and discipline are some of the factors we need to consider if we want to lose weight. Discipline is badly needed in order to control yourself on the food you eat since it is really hard to resist the temptation of eating when you are in a diet.

I agree that discipline is a key factor in losing weight. You have to stick to your regimen and not be easily tempted to eat what you shouldn't be eating. Also, it is important that you have that little journal where you can jot down all the calories you're consuming in a day. It helps you know how much time to spend on the cardio machine.
