I think the rank-and-file conservative has become dumber in the last ten years because of the smarter ones abandoning the party. It's about averages. If you've got a room of 10 people, five with IQs hovering around 80, five with IQs in the 120 range, your average IQ is 100 -- not impressive, but average enough. But if four of the smarter ones leave, the average IQ suddenly dips down to 87 -- only 11 points on Forrest Gump.

I also think the decay of conservatism has to do with a lack of necessity. In the 1970s, we were massively over-regulated. Even people who didn't like Reagan, trickle-down, and all that stuff were willing to go along with it, because he promised to cut back on some of the bureaucracy, and a lot of people felt that we necessary (whether or not Reagan was actually successful is a separate issue). I'd argue that it's become a far more complex issue in the last thirty years, as we're now both over and under-regulated, depending on the issue, so the old conservative adage of drowning the government in a bathtub doesn't (ahem) hold water anymore. It's no longer a black and white issue, one that "cut taxes, cut taxes, cut taxes" simply can't address. No matter how brightly they light that gay communist scarecrow on fire, they can't distract from the fact that their policies have become outdated, narrow, and utterly ineffective.

I think we see that here at DA.

There has always been extremists on both the right and the left ,and more moderate people on both the right and the left.

I think myself,GF and CR do represent the mainstream of liberal/left thought which is moderate,Gudio represents the extremist left, but the extremist left is not in the mainstream of current left/liberal thought.

On the other hand ,extremism has become the mainstream of the right,evidenced by the fact that Olympia Snowe (one of the few persons in either party who is a statesperson ,as opposed to a politican) is stepping down,in part because she doesn't feel welcome in her own party anymore.



The extremists have taken over the GOP,that's why the GOP is arguing birth control instead of jobs.

That is literally how most folks probably envision Teller after all these years. For Teller to claim he represents ANY thought whether "left" or "right" is preposterous. He does seem to support the neocon agenda though such as the removal of personal liberty, kill folks who do not worship his deity, attack people who tell the truth, steal money from those who earned it, those kinds of things.
