If that happens, they cast a provisional ballot, which becomes a vote upon verification. It's not a serious impediment to voting.

What would be its purpose? If your signature when you show up to vote matches the one you signed up with, that's enough. Re-establishing identity and eligibility over and over again serves no useful purpose. Should rules have a purpose and not be just more hoops for people to jump through to satisfy a noisy minority?

Sure. I'll grant that. When I can walk into a gun store and simply sign something and walk out with a gun without showing ID, I'll concede that ID is not neccessary to verify a person's identity.
