obviously. but we're not talking about men right now, because it wasn't a man that presented himself to congress in this circumstance. nobody wants to argue with you that men bear just as much responsibility for pregnancy as women do....we all know this. it seems like you're arguing with yourself, because you keep harping on a viewpoint that nobody here has. in the meantime, you've shared that you have been sterilized, and advertise that you live in "divorceland". your position is apparent, though your personal bone to pick with men is not the issue. the point i made was that women have 100% control over whether or not they get pregnant, despite the fact that the fluke girl and many on here would paint a different picture. seriously, isn't it ironic that a percentage of people go on and on about the need for women to have control over decisions involving their own bodies, yet we have people, including the one that testified before congress, that paint a picture of women as being so beholden to their own sexual urges that they think that pregnancy should be treated no differently than the common cold, in regard to how its prevention should relate to insurance?

here's the real meat of it. certain people are more than happy to rabidly stand by the idea that NO ONE has a say in what they do or don't do with their bodies, unless in asserting that sovereignty they are forced to the own the consequences of what they do or don't do. then, they are more than willing to cede their "absolute control", whether it be to government, or to whatever all-powerful, natural urge. that's the crux of the issue, and for anybody that was listening, that was the crux of what rush limbaugh was talking about. whether or not anybody was offended by the delivery has absolutely no bearing on the validity of the argument.

I have no real personal bone to pick with "men", just one in particular.

I don't agree with your assessment of Rush's "point", but we'll never convince the other of our POV, so it's a moot point now.

Geez, I thought I was cynical, until I met you. If my car breaks down or my house needs paint, insurance doesn't cover it, even though I pay the premiums. I'm trying to understand why people think every little medical expense should be covered by insurance. Shouldn't health insurance be for accidents, injuries, hospitalization, surgeries, illness, etc. Why isn't all birth control available over the counter? I can get a flu shot at the pharmacy, why not a BC shot. It's not like kids are getting high on BC pills. Why is a visit to the doctor or a prescription even necessary?

Yes, they can use birth control. That's the point.

That's exactly what she's doing. She's making appropriate, responsible decisions to use birth control to avoid a pregnancy that she's not ready for. In pursuit of that, she has purchased medical insurance, but it doesn't cover all of her medication. That's exactly what this discussion is about: Should medical insurance plans, particulary ones that you're MANDATED to get, cover your freakin' medical cost?

She is taking responsiblity for her actions by using BC. That's not the question. The question is: Should her school be able to tell her insurance company that they aren't allowed to cover her medication because they think it's bad magic? She says no. You say yes. That's what the question is. It has nothing to do with her sex life.

Any time I have to take scripts, I use my insurance for it. Why should her school be able to tell her insurance company that they're not allowed to cover prescriptions that they consider to be dark magic?

as has been stated, sexual activity is entirely optional. there is no chance involved in it's occurring. so, it's logical that many health insurance providers might not cover it. i would guess most providers don't cover, say, nicorette either. smoking is entirely optional. i've also never heard of providers covering o'douls for people who wish to avoid consuming full-strength alcoholic beverages.

and assuredly, georgetown, does not forbid its students from having insurance plans that include provisions for contraceptives. presumably, her insurance plan is one that is provided THROUGH the university, and as such, it is fair that the university excludes provision for services that stand in opposition to its religious traditions and convictions. if she doesn't like that, she is free to purchase insurance from a provider that is not associated with the university.

and it does have to do with her sex life, which she brought into the public arena. if she was interested in her sexual activity remaining "her business", then she wouldn't have gone in front of congress and testified that she believed her university should be forced to fund part of it.

because those prescriptions are for the treatment of conditions that, at least in part, occur due to circumstances beyond the absolute control of the patient.

We're not talking about sexual activity. We're talking about perscription drugs. Why can't you guys get your heads out of this girl's pants?

My insurer covered a Chantix script. I guess it's cheaper than an iron lung and chemo.

A lot of them cover hospitalization for treatment. If there were scripts for it, they'd most likely cover them.

    http://studentaffairs.georgetown.edu/insurance/

Most students who are charged Georgetown University tuition and registered in resident thesis research or registered for nine or more credit hours in a GU degree program (eight or more credit hours if a law or graduate student) are eligible and required to enroll in the most comprehensive student injury and sickness plan offered through the University, unless their other insurance coverage meets specific University requirements

She never said anything about sex. You creepy bastards are just obsessed with attempting to regulate and control women's sexuality, and that's why you're obsessed with controlling and regulating any kind of birth control.

    Irrelevant to the discussion.

You're thinking about insurance in countries with UHC, or libertopia.

In the real world, in the US, health insurance is often incredibly expensive. (nevermind contraceptives, and ignore the fact that contraceptives are free at the point of need in the countries with reasonable health care costs) US costs are around TWICE as expensive as in every other developed nation.

Go to page 20, chart II-7 here:

We could cover our whole population without even raising taxes if we emulated the NHS.

I will start feeling sympathy for insurance companies when subrogation becomes punishable by 5-15 years in prison. Until then, over-priced insurances can pay for whatever is necessary and LIKE IT.

It is difficult for any decent person to sit back and not comment on the anti-Semitism,racism ,sexism ,and all-around ignorance espoused on the majority of DA's posts,it's fucking sad when one gets a warning for simply being a decent person.

Because in the US, where there is no public health care system open to all, private insurance is expected to cover basic medications. Like contraceptives.

OTC methods, yes they sure are. Even stores with 24-hour pharmacies are open to all.

Well, all with insurance or the cash to pay out-of-pocket for prescription contraceptives, that is. The ones who can't afford the out-of-pocket cost for the prescription brands have to rely on OTC methods which aren't nearly as effective.

I'm getting the distinct impression that F&L has never tried to get pharmaceutical contraceptives before.

    Hmmm....

I didn't even mention the lovely exam that comes before the prescription, either. What joyous fun those are...
