Doesn't matter what's in your mind. Legally, she's an adult. This is one of the problems with the "line in the sand" legal system we have. Day before her birthday, he's a predator. Day after, he's a lucky SOB.

However, she doesn't have the brain of an adult yet, and won't for a few more years.

    I can't imagine having a potential step-daughter that's only a year younger than I am.
Doesn't matter legally. She's old enough to get blown up in the middle east, so she's old enough to boink her former teacher. Besides, who knows? Maybe he's really immature?

There does have to be a dividing point somewhere.

Oh I don't dispute that her and his actions are totally legal! She's 18 now and is legally able to make her own decisions.

I just have to wonder when her adult brain kicks in if she will think it was such a great idea and/or feel any remorse for the pain their actions caused his family. That's all.

I would venture to say the both have issues. I just think its interesting that her mother's vendetta has caused this to be on national news. Not like this kind of thing doesn't happen every day.

Totally agree, on all counts! They both have issues.

Mama needs to take a breath and realize that her little girl is now grown and can make her own decisions, even if Mama doesn't like it.
Did I "want" my oldest getting married at 21? Nope, but there was nothing I could do to stop her or change it. She's a grown woman capable of doing with her life as she sees fit. I no longer get the final say.

Well, unless you're in favor of eliminating the age of consent completely, that is.

I understand wanting the excitement and "new" of a relationship.

If she was really as sheltered as her mom claims she was, then he was her first. I just hope for her sake, he's knowledgable. Then again, how would she know?
He's going to be shunned by his family the rest of his life. I think...after maybe a year, he's going to decide the young stuff he left his family for wasn't worth it. I also think the girl in this equation is going to come to the same conclusion a lot sooner than he. She'll at least have a family to go back to. He won't. Talk about burning bridges...damn.

I'm of the opinion his interest in this girl wasn't in starting a new family.

Age of consent is pretty inconsistent already. How about a maturity test? Right of passage?

The law has to be both universal and objective. Every state legislates for itself.

The fact is that girl just threw away 20 years of her life and is not at same level of maturity as the creepy teacher. As CR hinted at, if she was in her 30's and this guy was say 65 then it would be a better fit.
