The irony is that the Taliban would probably not exist had we not sent dollars and military expertise (I don't think we sent hardware, yet I may be wrong) to Afghanistan when the Soviets invaded them. When the Soviets invaded, many Muslims from nations outside Afghanistan rushed to the aid of their Muslim brothers. When the Soviets were defeated, the Afghans believed they had repulsed the Soviets by the will of Allah; without help from any nation.
Allah alone had delivered them (I presume Allah furnished them with military equipment, bullets, cannons, rockets, etc.; if not, they had no problem using them from whever they got them.)
America’s help was forgotten quickly, and yes, we did it for ourselves.
Many, scholars believe that as many as one-half of those that came to the aid of Afghanistan never left, eventually forming the Taliban.
Yes, this is the "short version," and not the only reason the Taliban exists, but it was the final "step" (or event or...) that lead to their formation. Incidentally, I strongly encourage anyone to research them and not take my word for it.
One benefit of the Soviet invasion was the bankruptcy of the U. S. S. R. which lead to the fall (eventually) of communism in that nation. (Yes, they were already bankrupt, but that war exposed it to the world. I find it laughable that we are also bankrupt, tragically laughable, and we just flat-out refuse to admit it.)
Some Taliban Rules Per Sharia:
Under the Taliban regime, Sharia law is interpreted to forbid a wide variety of previously lawful activities in Afghanistan. One Taliban list of prohibitions included: pork, pig, pig oil, anything made from human hair, satellite dishes, cinematography, and equipment that produces the joy of music, pool tables, chess, masks, alcohol, tapes, computers, VCRs, television, anything that propagates sex and is full of music, wine, lobster, nail polish, firecrackers, statues, sewing catalogs, pictures, Christmas cards.
They also got rid of employment, education, and sports for all women, dancing, clapping during sports events, kite flying, and characterizations of living things, no matter if they were drawings, paintings, photographs, stuffed animals, or dolls. Men had to have a fist size beard at the bottom of their chin. Conversely, they had to wear their head hair short. Men had to wear a head covering.
There have been massacres of other Muslim groups that barely made the news by the Taliban. Even bin Laden held the House of Suad as virtually hostage. They paid him to stay away from them. His extortion worked well.

I do recall priceless works of art being destroyed by the Taliban years ago. This is because Wahhabis believe that only Allah can create, thus they did the “un-creating” of works of art that are gone forever.
Muslim author and apologist Hamid Alger has written a splendid book called Wahhabism: A Critical Essay that can be purchased for 4 bucks on Amazon used. I recommend it. It is a brilliant, well-written, understandable succinct history of the Wahhabis, how and when they formed, etc. (even if he does attempt to deny that Sunni Islam has been hijacked in large part by the growing influence of Wahhabi beliefs).

This insanity did not start with Obama. It started decades ago, thus to rag on President Obama is to ignore history. But you already realize this, for both Rep and Dem administrations have gone bonkers in that region. Nor is it about to stop, sadly.
I wish we would stop meddling in that region of the world. That includes Israel. Get our people out and let them govern their sovereign nation—and they are a sovereign nation. We have done virtually no good in that region in 40 years. Why we spend billions and attempt to help them is insane, especially when we have so many problems here and Israel, contrary to what I see posted on DA, can and will take care of herself. Israel needs no help from America, whether it is our bucks or our military hardware. They are a mighty nation when it comes to their military. We insult them by helping them. It would be me "helping" Ali beat Sonny Liston (that is, Ali would be insulted).
