linkWhitney Houston, who reigned as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, has died. She was 48.
Publicist Kristen Foster said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unknown.
At her peak, Houston the golden girl of the music industry. From the middle 1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the world's best-selling artists. She wowed audiences with effortless, powerful, and peerless vocals that were rooted in the black church but made palatable to the masses with a pop sheen.
Her success carried her beyond music to movies, where she starred in hits like "The Bodyguard" and "Waiting to Exhale."
She had the he perfect voice, and the perfect image: a gorgeous singer who had sex appeal but was never overtly sexual, who maintained perfect poise.
She influenced a generation of younger singers, from Christina Aguilera to Mariah Carey, who when she first came out sounded so much like Houston that many thought it was Houston.
But by the end of her career, Houston became a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use. Her album sales plummeted and the hits stopped coming; her once serene image was shattered by a wild demeanor and bizarre public appearances. She confessed to abusing cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her once pristine voice became raspy and hoarse, unable to hit the high notes as she had during her prime.
"The biggest devil is me. I'm either my best friend or my worst enemy," Houston told ABC's Diane Sawyer in an infamous 2002 interview with then-husband Brown by her side.
It was a tragic fall for a superstar who was one of the top-selling artists in pop music history, with more than 55 million records sold in the United States alone.

Sad. The plastic surgery plus the bad lifestyle made her look like a 60 year old tranny.

good riddence crack head.
she hasn't had a hit in 20 years, and that was a Dolly Parton cover.
Worthless crack sucker, who pretty much contributed not a damn thing to the world despite lining her dopeman's pockets.
They interrupted my nightly television with a breaking news story... I'm thinking.. "oh god I hope they didnt nuke new york" or something, and the big news is this waste is dead.
/facepalm
Wow, heartless much? She clearly was a troubled soul and went down wrong paths. But she DID have an amazing talent and left the world some beautiful and memorable songs, that touched millions of people. Not to mention that she's one of the most awarded female singers ever.
What have you contributed to the world, apart from your rudeness and cold heart?
And if you want it, come and get it... for crying out loud!
'cause this love that he has given you was never in doubt.
Let go of your heart, let go of your head and feel it now.

Raising a well rounded son, i'm a good husband and father, I work for a living, I've taken in stray's and donated to charities, oh and I try to do a little good by people, set a good example and take opportunities to help others in anyway I can find.
She smoked 100 million in crack. A terrible waste of opportunity she was.
Hardly worthy of the attention or people's emotional drain.
^ Well. that's good.
But everyone has weaknesses and character flaws, and some people fall into traps that can take years to get out of, if they ever do.
If anything, I hope this death of yet another celebrity with a drug problem causes people to think twice before using drugs in the first place.
And this is probably a topic for a new thread, but I don't agree with treating addicts like they're evil or worthless. Some say it's a sin and others say it's a disease. I think it's both, but once a person becomes addicted, it's not something they can just stop on their own. They need help, obviously. That's why this death is so sad to me, because (although the cause of death has not been stated yet) it appears that she never overcame her 'demons' and got the help she needed.Ok, I'll stop rambling now.

RIP. It's sad she wasted a great voice on many of the songs she did, but it was her choice. She had the talent to do much better, but the Big Bucks were too much of a trap, apparently.
How she died is pretty much a non-issue, and I haven't heard what the autopsy shows, so everybody is just guessing at the moment, so the usual innernutz lynch mobs are premature at the least, and on DA they usually require a heavily edited YouTube video anyway, eh? ...
President Josiah Bartlet: Sweden has a 100% literacy rate. 100%! How do they do that?
Leo McGarry: Maybe they don't and they can't add.

RIP to an amazingly talented lady who lost her way through fame... not the first nor the last.
She died a long time ago, the day she took her first sniff of shit... still it is sad , she punished her body enough with the abuse of drugs.

It is difficult for any decent person to sit back and not comment on the anti-Semitism,racism ,sexism ,and all-around ignorance espoused on the majority of DA's posts,it's fucking sad when one gets a warning for simply being a decent person.
Once again ,were you raised to be a jerk or did you become a jerk on your own?
100% agrement.
There are many major disagreements you and I have.
But,on many human issues you and I can see the forrest for trees,it's too bad many here can't do the same thing.
Well,I thought back to when Elvis died and his original (censored) autopsy said he had hardening of the arteries ,and while I was/am far from being a medical expert,I knew that was abnormal for a 42 year old.
In other words ,even if her past addiction didn't kill her,it's possible, maybe probable that in the long run it contributed.
