Which makes the whole thing a cynical political ploy by the president. IOW, par for the course. Contraception being a good idea or not is a moot point. The president simply doesn't have the authority to do this, and I hope Congress grows a pair and slaps him down.

Beyond that the poll finds that a majority of voters, including a majority of Catholics, don’t believe Catholic hospitals and universities should be exempted from providing the benefit.

Fifty-seven percent of voters think that women employed by Catholic hospitals and universities should have the same rights to contraceptive coverage as other women, and that includes 56% of Independents.

Fifty-eight percent of voters say they oppose Republicans in Congress trying to take away the birth control benefit that saves women hundreds of dollars a year, including 56 percent of independents.

Conservatives may think they've won some kind of battle after Obama softened the provision only to find out they've given the president another reason for the country to vote for him and not vote for any Republican. The more the candidates battle to out-conservative each other to win their party's nomination, the further they distance themselves from voters in the general election.

Bottom line, Obama wins big on the contraception issue, on two fronts.

Catholic hospitals limit their services to practices permitted by directives established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. As previously noted, totally irrelevant. Republicans are not taking anything away. The biggest thing, however, is that the president simply doesn't have the authority to order this. There would likely be massive support for the president ordering electronics companies to provide big screen TVs for free, but he can't do that either.

The Constitution, not Congress or the President, says what those other people can make laws about.

And decrees declaring that this person or that person will be forced to pay for "benefits", are nowhere to be found in that document.
