NATO is obsolete. It existed to fend off the threat of Soviet agression on Western Europe. The Soviet Union no longer exists and Europe's democracies are more than a match for Russia...economically and militarily.

Russia is still Russia, and has the same geo-political strategies it's always had for hundreds of years; being 'Soviet' or not doesn't change anything, but yes, the U.S. can certainly cut back on its participation by quite a bit, and let them foot more of the bill for their own defense. We're mainly just interested in the weapons sales that go with membership.
President Josiah Bartlet: Sweden has a 100% literacy rate. 100%! How do they do that?

Leo McGarry: Maybe they don't and they can't add.

Not sure that will happen anytime soon. If the EU had to completely defend itself without the US military to which helps to defers their military cost, they would have to fit the entire bill themselves, therefore they would have cut back on their entitlements. Not going to happen.

I don't dispute that. But, they have far less capability to make war than they did prior to the breakup. They also have a lot of former Soviet states surrounding them who are resentful and pissed. This makes Russia far less of a threat. Also, have you looked at Western Europe's GDP vs Russia's? If GDP is a measure of the ability to make war and sustain it, Russia has absolutely no chance in Hell. Either GB or Germany could probably take them on single-handedly. And, who is going to protect Russia's borders with the former Soviet states if they decide to attack Western Europe full-bore?
