Further, the right wing christian population has this sick idea that they are going to be raptured soon so they are pulling out all the stops to get the scarier parts of Revelations moving forward in good order so we they can meet Jesus in the sky or something.

To answer it theoretically, because it benefits American interests more than any other countries in the mid-east and because most Americans (both liberals and conservatives) support Israel's right to exist, from secular and religious reasons. Again, what most Americans want DOES matter, as always
However, when it comes to the real world today, Israel is MUCH stronger than its enemies, but at the same time, it's much smaller and could be threatened if they don't fight dirty. Therefore, it is not out of the question for Israel to nuke their enemies, especially the ones that are far away, like Iran, if it decided that it's the only way to survive. In other words, Israel will survive no matter what, however, its enemies may not, and TOO MANY people will die if their barbaric enemies completely get out of control, which is what the US is trying to prevent. They KNOW that as soon as the dogs are out of control and do something REALLY stupid, Israel will respond by ANY means necessary, which could affect LOTS of things, including American interests.

There are many kinds of interests and benefits other than oil too, you know. Also, this isn't so much about Israel's existence alone, rather than what could happen if a country tried to stop Israel's existence. Israel could do a lot of damage on many levels if such a fight was provoked and they really felt threatened for their survival. It's one thing when they fight Hezbullah or Hamas with their gloves on, as they couldn't threaten Israel's existence, but if Iran got very strong and tried to actually finish Hitler's job, Israel wouldn't just "go away", and you know it, it would be WWWIII and quite possibly a nuclear war that could effect not only America but the entire world.
