Sucks to be him.
linkJoe Paterno, the longtime Penn State coach who won more games than anyone in major college football but was fired amid a child sex abuse scandal that scarred his reputation for winning with integrity, died Sunday. He was 85.
His family released a statement Sunday morning to announce his death: "His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled."
"He died as he lived," the statement said. "He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been. His ambitions were far reaching, but he never believed he had to leave this Happy Valley to achieve them. He was a man devoted to his family, his university, his players and his community."
Paterno built his program on the credo "Success with Honor," and he found both. The man known as "JoePa" won 409 games and took the Nittany Lions to 37 bowl games and two national championships. More than 250 of the players he coached went on to the NFL.

"He will go down as the greatest football coach in the history of the game," Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said after his former team, the Florida Gators, beat Penn State 37-24 in the 2011 Outback Bowl.
Paterno's son Scott said on Nov. 18 that his father was being treated for lung cancer. The cancer was diagnosed during a follow-up visit for a bronchial illness. A few weeks after that revelation, Paterno also broke his pelvis after a fall but did not need surgery.
Paterno had been in the hospital since Jan. 13 for observation for what his family had called minor complications from his cancer treatments. Not long before that, he conducted his only interview since losing his job, with The Washington Post. Paterno was described as frail then, speaking mostly in a whisper and wearing a wig. The second half of the two-day interview was conducted at his bedside.
"As the last 61 years have shown, Joe made an incredible impact," said the statement from the family. "That impact has been felt and appreciated by our family in the form of thousands of letters and well wishes along with countless acts of kindness from people whose lives he touched. It is evident also in the thousands of successful student athletes who have gone on to multiply that impact as they spread out across the country."
The final days of Paterno's Penn State career were easily the toughest in his 61 years with the university and 46 seasons as head football coach.
Penn State president Rodney Erickson said the university is grieving Paterno's death and plans to honor him for his contributions to the school.
In a statement released Sunday, Erickson called Paterno "a great man who made us a greater university."
Erickson said Paterno's "dedication to ensuring his players were successful both on the field and in life is legendary."

Sucks to be him.
Sad ending to a long life and magnificent career.
I wish he had put the lives of the children before football and the school however. He admitted that he could have done more. However he is now gone and hopefull lessons will be learned by this all.
Rest in Peace.
RIP

I think Joe Paterno got a bum rap on the sex abuse scandal.
Joe Paterno didn't witness it,he was only told a rumor by the person who claimed to witness it,and where I come from (not that far away from Penn State) you don't go to the police station saying "I don't know if this is true or not,but someone told me....".
It's the witness who should have gone to the police ,not Joe Paterno.
Joe Paterno did the right thing by telling the school, then the school should have told the police, but a not non-witness,non-administration figure.
RIP Joe,you got a bum rap at the end,too bad you didn't get to tell your full side of the story in court.
It is difficult for any decent person to sit back and not comment on the anti-Semitism,racism ,sexism ,and all-around ignorance espoused on the majority of DA's posts,it's fucking sad when one gets a warning for simply being a decent person.
What more could he have done?
Why didn't the witness go to the police?
Why didn't the school go to the police as soon as Paterno told them?
I would say Paterno should have gone to the police if he witnessed it,he didn't,he was merely told by someone else, and he had no idea if what he was told was or wasn't true.
Paterno did the right thing by telling the school,it should have been on either the witness or the school to tell the police.
Not much more and he was going through so much in his last months, I don't know if he even had time to really think about what actually happend. He admitted that he could have done more.
It is difficult for any decent person to sit back and not comment on the anti-Semitism,racism ,sexism ,and all-around ignorance espoused on the majority of DA's posts,it's fucking sad when one gets a warning for simply being a decent person.
Then those Egyptian guys and girls who fondled Larry Logan also got a bum rap.The thing is Teller, the homosexual/pedophile raped children systematically was a close associate of Patreno. Paterno knew about it and did not stop it. A random Egyptian guy would probably have done more to stop the rapes.
Bum rap my ass. GUILTY!

Rapping too many bums of children is the issue that Teller is denying. Larry Logan went into a war zone and apparently got her ass tapped. Here in America Paterno presided over a flucking world famous institution of higher learning with innocent children getting their bums rapped.Disgusting.
And it is too late for Paterno to make amends for his crimes.
Obviously, the man was of low moral character. I'm sure he'll enjoy lounging in hell with Ted Kennedy.
It was way,way more than fondling.
Of course,no man will ever know what she went through (fisted in the vagina and anus while other goons where hitting her with fists and weapons ,and pulling hair out her her scalp) and very few women ever will.
I'm glad I despise you.
Well,he hasn't been convicted in a court of law yet,I'll admit it doesn't look good for Sandusky , but we don't know exactly what happend yet.The thing is Teller, the homosexual/pedophile raped children systematically
Actually,he wasn't.was a close associate of Patreno.
Sandusky and Paterno were professional associates, but weren't close friends or even casual buds.
Source?Paterno knew about it and did not stop it.
I know of no one who has accused JoePa of that.
You are a buffon,I despise buffoons.A random Egyptian guy would probably have done more to stop the rapes.
Gulity of what?
That's what Sandusky is accused of ,all Paterno was accused of was not going to the police over something he didn't witness or even know about.
Why did JoePa did get fired and not the actual witness?
It seems to me the testimony of the witness would be more useful to the police than someone who was told second hand.
IGNORANCE ALERT!Larry Logan went into a war zone and apparently got her ass tapped. Here in America Paterno presided over a flucking world famous institution of higher learning with innocent children getting their bums rapped.Disgusting.
And it is too late for Paterno to make amends for his crimes.
Why?
BUFFOON ALERT!I'm sure he'll enjoy lounging in hell with Ted Kennedy.

Teller, you despise the truth. Not only that you are a hypocrite in your comparison of the Larry Logan alleged fisting incident and the fact that Paterno protected a serial child rapist.

Come on Teller, try to use a thread to organize your thoughts in a logical way and formulate an idea and express it intelligently. If you do, you will notice I am right which psychologically is why you do not. Because then you would be admitting you are wrong, and we know you can't stand doing that because yer ego is a fragile little thing.![]()
^Reading comprehension fail alert!
If I'm not mistaken (and I could be), Sandusky was not that involved with Penn State anymore by the time the witness told Joe Pa.
In any case ,Joe Pa didn't have the power to do that ,it was the school who had the power and Joe Pa told the school as soon ASAP what the witness said,so the ball was in Penn State's court ,not Joe Pa's.
Plus ,even though he was highly educated, Joe Pa was an elderly, old school man from another time,he kind of said he didn't know about things like child abuse in general and couldn't comprehend it.
Again, someone told Joe Pa a rumor,Joe Pa told the school what the rumor was, maybe Joe Pa should have tried to talk the witness into going to the police, but hindsight is 20/20.
Again,I can't see firing Joe Pa when he told the school ASAP and not firing the witness who was the one who really should have gone to the police ASAP.
