Interesting, but you do know that the Bush tax cuts effected all tax payer's paychecks and not just the higher brackets. Repealing the tax cuts would hurt the middle class the most.
Okay. So, although I think recinding the Bush-era tax cuts is a bad move because I happen to beleive any money taken out of the private sector slows economic activity...I've come to the realization that Republicans need to agree to let the tax cuts go.
Why?
Well, the simple fact is, most people (voters) don't understand how increasing taxes on their employers harms them. They're interested in revenge for percieved wrongdoing by rich people in general. A certain number of votes will go to Obama simply because these morons want to stick it to rich folks.
Republicans need to take the issue away from Obama. Agree to the increases and he's got nothing to run on. Then point out that repealing the tax cuts will only generate $35B in new revenues. Unfortunately, most moron Americans believe that if we'd just get rid of the tax cuts, we'd be able to balance the budget. FALSE! This needs to be pointed out as well. Perhaps a diagram?
Our deficit is at $1.29T. $35B in extra revenue won't make a difference. Neither will $300B in Medicare cuts over 10 years. It's a goddamned joke...and THAT needs to be pointed out.
If Republicans can get their heads out of their asses, there is a chance they can get their candidate elected next year.

After jacking up taxes on rich folks, we will need to cut another $940B to balance the budget. Or, they could try to raise $940B in new taxes. I'm guessing that's not going to work since that would put another 6% of GDP in the hands of government that already consumes 20 or 25% of GDP. I think it would seriously cripple the economy and lead to even more massive layoffs/joblessness.

Correct. Becuase if you look at the numbers, it's obvious that taxing rich people more won't solve our deficit/debt problem. THEN we'd be forced to actually look at realistic solutions. This is precisely why Republicans should give it away. Just say "Okay, we agree to recind the Bush tax cuts on the rich...that will generate $35B in new revenue (according to Obama's own numbers). Now what?"
I imagine that would be met with stone silence by Obama et. al.

The Republicans should announce that they will end the Bush Cuts for the top bracket IF, combined with deep spending cuts, it results in an IMMEDIATE balanced budget. Not spread over 10 years or some shit. Now. The Dems would shit a brick if the Repubs ever did that and wouldn't ever be able to present a balanced budget plan without the much needed spending cuts.
The Republicans need new leadership. They need some people who will challenge and provoke the left every single day. They should also be offering job legislation and tax reform proposals every single day.
